(I was asked to show some of my older pieces so I'm going to bump up a few of my posts so they can see them rather than post them again)

Adam Agusti and I were discussing Plummets on Facebook and I took some new pictures of mine to show him so I thought I might as well post them here as well. All of these are personal finds except for two of them.

In the 2nd picture the one laying sideways in the top row and the one to the far right in the middle row are not personal finds. The top one I got in a collection I bought when I was 17 and it was first time I had ever seen a Plummet and had no clue what it was. The other was a gift from my sister in law for helping her get her fathers collection in order after he passed away. All others are personal finds.

Here's a few close ups.

The first two are the two best I have ever found. The one on the right is the first one I ever found and the one on the left was the 3rd one I ever found. Both were found the same year but at different sites and different states. The Teardrop is from Ohio and the Bullet one is from Kentucky.

The 2nd one is the one I just found this past Spring. It is also made from Hematite but is highly exfoliated and rather rough looking, but still a nice big fat one.

The 3rd picture is one made from Granite and this one is grooved around the middle. When I found this one someone had flipped it out of the ground and I found it dirty side up. They obviously didn't know what it was.

The 4th picture shows two Acorn types and both are made from Granite.

The 5th picture shows two made from Sandstone..

The 6th picture is one made from Banded Slate

The last picture is two Teardrop types. the one on the right is the first one I ever found and the other is the one my sister in law gave me.

Man what a collection of personal finds. Amazing the work that went into some of these and how easily they must have been lost. I have not seen a better bunch they look like they need to be in a book. Thanks for the view.

I totally agree! Bravo! I have only found two in all my hunting and I'm surrounded by water..hmmmm. I hope you don't mind me showing them. I'm very proud of them. Both are out of the ordinary. The first is shell and grooved on top and bottom. The second is pottery of which I have only seen one other. It is in Tom Clark's collection.

Thanks everyone.

Rock, I have never found one close to or on the river or near any large bodies of water. Almost all of these were found at least a 1/2 mile from the river so I don't buy into the Net Weight theory. I can't see going to all the trouble to make these to use as a Net Weight when a simple notched rock will do. I think the Teardrop types were Amulets or Pendants and the smaller Acorn types were used as Bolo Stones.

I ran into a man today leaving what I like to call "my spot" He is a cool Guy and the only other with permission to be there. He was all excited to show me what he found. He says.." I think I found a stone chess piece!" He proceeds to show me one of the most beautiful greenstone plummets I've ever seen. He thought it must have been rounded on the bottom to sit in holes in a chess board used on a Spanish ship to keep them from falling over. After I told him what he had and showed him a few photos he started doing a jig..haha.. I wish I got a photo but just hurried to get to the spot..... good story though.

Sounds like a good reason to me. I have always figured why use them in water after going through all that trouble just to maybe losing them. That is a fine collection you have sir.
