I believe the signal response is stronger in damp ground. At least you don't need a pick to get at the target anymore.

My detector seems to work better in damp/normal ground. Dry/cracked ground, not so good.

I agree with the above two responses. I have always found deeper stuff when the ground damp or outright wet.

I also agree with everyone so far. The best time to detect for me is a few days after a good rain when the soil is drying from soaked to moist. Seems to bring a lot of targets out, however the Iron will also sound off.
