First off the weather was beautiful over the weekend so I called my good friend Wes and on Saturday we headed to a site I have been researching. According to research it should have been a early 1700's home site on the property and it was confirmed two weeks ago when we got into a good patch just before leaving. So we hit the field early and it didn't disappoint. If this is how 2016 is going to go for me its going to be a good year.

1st hole 10 minutes into detecting and this 1857? three cent piece pops up.

Then after some searching and picking up some scrap brass and lead we headed back to the truck for Wes to switch out machines. We were looking at the adjacent field and just wanted to give it a quick once over. Nothing was shown on the maps but just to be safe. We struck out but signals were very limited. I dug this which I can assume is some sort of weight

Just as we were about to head back to where the hot spot was I got a killer signal dug down and this beauty pops up?

So this of course caused us to spend more time searching about that area, but to no avail there were no more signals so we went back to our hot spot. Then the buttons and old colonial silver started just jumping out at me!!!

Then the find that made the day (as if I hadn't already had a killer day) this 1649-1660 British Commonwealth cut shilling!!! its beat all to pieces because of farm equipment but you can clearly see it!!

Excellent start for the new year! Congratulations.

Man that is the stuff dreams are made of. Some people search a lifetime and don't find those beauties. The 17th century silver is a rare and very tough find. What a site my friend. Great job

Awesome start to the new year!! Congrats

you had a day that most dream about!!
Congrats!!!

Man its going to be hard to beat that hunt for the rest of the year.

Update, I measured it and it appears to be a sixpense, measured just under 26mm. So take out the bends it matches the sixpense size. Still awesome though!!

NICE FINDS STROLLIN ....

yes it is. A rare coin, but a very rare UK find, & therefore an extremely rare US find.

Wow just wow

What an excellent day of digging. Congratulations.

Lets put a little more evidence & context onto the rare Commonwealth Sixpence.

I checked both UK databases & there are only 2 recorded. Even if you take into account that roughly only 1 in 10 get recorded, that's still only 20 dug examples in the UK in the last 20 or so years. So it would not surprise me 1 bit, if this is the only known example dug in the US.

BANNER

The stats are clear, there are less than 18,000 detectorist in the whole of the UK & all of them only find this type of coin, on average, 1 a year.

Our rate is 1 a year, I'm going to gamble that the US rate for this coin is 1 in every 50+ years. I still think that as detecting in the US has been going less than 50 years, you got the only 1.

If you ever want a swinging buddy, let me know :tongue3: I'm fairly close to you

NICE SITE!!! You are on it for sure!

Wow what a rare and amazing BANNER find. Congrats buddy on an incredible recovery. And thanks to Cru for pointing and just how rare this is with good solid evidence. Just awesome

Wow is right!

Started out by seeing the 3¢ silver and thought, "oh that's neat" then kept scrolling and saw the cob and thought, "holy..." then the half real, then the cut silver then the other silver... now that "huh, neat" turned into, "wow, one of the best posts I've seen in a while."
