i can't play one sound on these whistle's
and i cannot it figure out when the early white settlers said the mandan-arikara children could get a large variety of sounds from these whistle's
i am an experienced musician and i don't get it.....i think if there was someone that could show us how they work it would help

HI Steve.
These whistles were probably for the amusement of small children more than for actually trying to play music.
I think they were just simple toys. Easy to make and fun for the kids.
Emphasis on toys.
I do wonder though if maybe they used em on hunting expeditions to communicate with one another.
Regardless, you have an amazing collection of whistles, especially when we know they are all personal finds.
I never get tired of looking at your stuff.

The one I made is more like a signal whistle,one pitch/tone.And even then I have to plug one end.Very cool looking artifacts....

gtp- yup i think at least three of them are complete
i looked on you tube and there was a guy that could get some sounds from one but he had to plug one side with a ball of pine pitch
he plugged it right behind the center hole
but i still cannot figure it out

I think of the scenario where the one kid lays out the high pitch whistle and the other kid is sticking his fingers in his mouth trying to figure out how the hell he did that. Some people can get it and some people cannot. Keep at it man one day she will lay out a tune. You are a musician? What instrument do you play if you do not mind me asking? I have been playing guitar for over 25yrs now. I love that as much as i do artifact hunting, which is something i need to start getting out and doing more. Lost alot of land in the past years to development. That field you guys hunt is littered with relics. One hell of a spot. Have you ever found a Plain style Catlinite pipe there? It would seem like a good place to find one...................................GTP(Chris)

i am mainly a guitar player and also banjo and ukulele all my life
i have a lot of vintage guitars from the 1930's like martin gibson and larson
now I will tell why my name is larson1951-i play mostly Larson made guitars(from the 30's) and i was born in 1951-not far from sitting bull's grave
been there lots of times

larson, alot of the first hand accounts of the Lakota battles, between 1866 and 1876, tell of eagle bone whistles being used in battle....meant as a way to discombobulate the troops....goat
