Not saying these were never used, but we see so many of these natural stones on here, I feel it's time to try to get this information to sink into a few skulls around here. There are to many collectors that cannot tell the difference and should learn. There are pictures, descriptions, and good explanations, AND it's short and sweet.

So, lets quit hoping and guessing and learn.

Here is my 1 and only and its a artifact made from a natural stone. I find others in the creek that are natural. This was found in a field above the creek at the top of a hill.

Nice cupped stone.

Natural you say huh? I for one didn't know there was any other kind of stone back in those days rock. I bet all your artifacts (except for pottery) was made from natural stone.

I find lots of water polished stones 60 to 80 feet above one creek I hunt. Those Glaciers and floods sure pushed up a lot of material. So, often times hills near creeks contain a lot (not allot) of stones.... Allot is like how much one is going to allow toward someone or something.

Did you look at the links? Have you got a pretty good idea of the difference now?

I notice the nutting stones are usually centered on the stone and often the holes on Omar's are often in odd places or not centered.

So which is this one quito? Made from the same type of rock as the other one I posted but is flat not square. Found in the same area as the other. While you are in the teaching mood :tongue3: It has a depression in the middle but not as deep. Ive never posted this one before. Also what was each type used for? I don't find many of these type of artifacts.

Hey rock, I am always in a teaching mood. :-) Judging from the poor picture, and going by your description, I would say it has done some hammering. It is for sure NOT an Omar. Does it resemble the wear on that excellent example I recently posted a great picture of ?

You sure are asking a lot of me this morning. But I am not going to answer any more of your questions till you answer mine from way back on this thread. What was it you saw to determine hammer stone right out of the chute with those first pictures?

On mine that I posted I believe it would be considered a grinder or better term a Mano type of tool. It also could of been a small Metate maybe used for herbs it is to small for grinding anything larger. For some reason they liked using the red quartzite stones in the camp site I found these in. I will try and get a better pic of it when I get off of work earlier next week.

No, silly me, I should have said earlier in the other thread. You should remember, the natural one that wasn't a hammer or grinder. This one.

It looks different from the types of rocks I find. It looks polished from holding it or grinding due to the over all color of the stone. Even the chip on the stone shows patina from age. Its the same color as the rest of the stone. I find some that show the brown discoloration but it is from rubbing the stone like a grinder and from years of holding it. The hands have a oil residue that will turn cobbles brown and discolor them. That was my reason. All joking aside I would of carried his rock home with me if I had found it in the creek. Most of the cobbles here have a white to brown cortex but not all one color like his on the outside.

WOW! You sure saw a lot of alteration by man in that natural cobble that isn't there. Oh well, carry on.

I never said I would of kept it I said I would of brought it home. I found some things today but after washing them most went in the trash. I still enjoyed looking either way. Not every rock is a artifact. "Carry On"

I know what you said, and I never said you would have kept it. I just said "you saw a lot of alteration by man in that natural cobble that isn't there", body oil staining and all for example.

You wash rocks, then throw then throw the non artifacts in the garbage? I hope your terminology down there is much different than up here.
