Well I didn't find it today but last week... I found a large cent that was cut in half. My oldest coin to date! A local park is doing some renovation and installing a walking path. The city dug up about 12" of soil to put in a walking path. They turned the soil over pretty good which made for easy digging. I found this large cent as almost a surface find in 1" of dirt. And as a added bonus I found my 1st Merc of my young metal detecting career. A 1940 to which I don't have a picture of but it's in real good shape. Man I tell you what! It sure is a thrill to pull out a shiney dime instead of those dull stained clad ones. Here's my pic's of the copper.

Cool clipped coppa. My brotha found a 1700 clipped William III coppa yesterday.

Nice clipped copper. You know it has to be no newer than mid 1830's, the cent is underlined. Matron head.

Greg, After an hour of cross eyed looking ::) I am 95% certain your "cut" Large Cent is a:

1829 Coronet Type Martron Head variety that is attributed as a Newcomb 5 N.5 variety which is one of the more scarce varieties for that year.

So, if it were my coin in would be going into a coin flip it marked as a 1829 Coronet Type N.5 Large Cent (Cut in Half)

"Clipped" in coins usually means a clipped planchet and not a coin that has been cut in half.
A good example of a clipped copper is the one I posted earlier this year. That is a "clipped planchet" coin. I attached the photo of my "clipped" planchet coin, big difference between clipped and cut.....

Don in South Jersey :)

That is the third clipped...ok cut (thanks Don) copper I've seen recently. Great find. Good job on the ID Don. You went above and beyond on this one. The reason I love this site is because of people like you. You would have some real talent if you could ID this cut copper I found the other day.

LOL!!! Don you got your work cut out for you on this one!!! ;D

Thank you so much for your diligence and vast knowledge of large cents. Now if you were me, what would you do with a coin such as mine? It will be forever in my possession even though it's not what collectors are looking for. 1829!!! Yeee-Friggin-ha!!!! :D

Very Best Regards,

Greg (Clad 2 meet u)

That's still a really great coin and a great find, and you give me hope.
