Hey guys! A few weeks ago I got lucky enough to find some nice coins including a very nice 1856 S 50 cent piece. Well today it happened again. In one hole about an inch deep comes out a 1855 O 50cent piece as well as a 1857 S which is slightly harder to read. I'm just ecstatic right now! I also found a nice buttplate (about 16 from this site) and a trigger guard along with some musket balls and other gun parts. Any ideas on the the lead item is that has the pointy things? Found 2 at this site. Thanks for looking.

They sure are! Thanks I had no idea what those were. And here's the kicker....I'm in the Western U.S.

Now that IS a kicker. You seriously need to find out if a master gunmaker had a shop anywhere near where you are hunting. Shouldn't be that tough as Western U.S. was settled later. All those gun parts (I'm still reeling from 16 butt plates) CANNOT be a coincidence. A trading post? Old guns bought and refurbished for sale to American Indians? heck with the coins - you've got an honest-to-goodness MYSTERY on your hands. I couldn't SLEEP thinking about an explanation for all those parts - and even weirder, they're all consistent with FINE KY or PENN rifles! The butt plate you pictured is DEF from a "fine" piece. Graceful lines, brass, etc. You may find out something about your area that the local historians don't even know. How about some pics of the other gun parts . . . and the "what zits" that you couldn't figure out??

What a awesome group of finds you have. Hit that place from every angle SLOW and dig it all!!! Looks like she has more waiting to be found.! :occasion14:

Trading post is more likely as we have them from the 1840s era. I'll post the pics tomorrow!!! Thanks

Congrats on the seated halves.

... Haha

The trigger guard and butt plate COULD be from a U.S. "Harper's Ferry" Model 1803 Musket, I can't say for certain they are but they sure look right for it... Check all the iron signals in the area and you might get the lock and side plate too and maybe the patchbox cover is there as well. Either way, pretty good finds!

Sure could be! Now that there's some gun guys here let me post ALL the gun parts I'll label them with numbers and hopefully get some ID's at least to what part of a gun they are.

All right gun lovers help me out. This is a lot of stuff if you want better pics of certain things please just ask. I was thinking number 12 was the part shown on the rifle pic I added. Thanks a bunch.

Now, you have a '55, '56' '57 Seated coins, and need to find the rest of the series...! :laughing7:

23 and 24 appear to be parts of the same broken trigger guard, it looks similar to ones I've seen on Kentucky rifles, and may go with the smaller of the three buttplates, were they found near each other? I also see some ram rod guides. You have a really nice collection of 18th 19th century gun parts. I'd suggest posting them up in smaller groupings on the What Is It forum so more of us who know guns can have a look and compare ideas

21 through 25 were found in the same hole. All this stuff is from a few sites but they all share the time periods of the 1840s and share the same finds.

Awesome silver recoveries, congratulations!

26 is also part of a trigger guard, never seem one rolled up like that...... 27 is part of a left hand side plate

Great job on the halves and the trigger guard!!

Just for fun and probably just me or that particular photo but does the tarnish make it look like a creepy face on the 1857...
