So after finding a 1964 silver dime, then talking to my aunt who is a teller (she told me some guy came in and picked up boxes of pennies to look through) and finding this forum, I thought YES this sounds great! Read through about 200 topics here, just totally captivated. Sounded like fun!

Picked up my first box. Found two wheats and two canadian pennies. One of the wheats was a 1936 s.

It was fun enough, so I went and picked up a box of dimes and three boxes of pennies.

Here's my final take:
18 wheats (including 1936 s and 1938)
19 canadian pennies
1 Norwegian 50 norbecs or something like that.

Overall, here's what I think:

On ebay, one can buy a roll of wheat pennies for $5. Sure, those are picked through, but am I going to find a wheat that is SO different in value? Am I really going to find a penny that makes it "worth it"?

For *me* I think it's cool because you are actively finding the pennies. You make it happen. Sure one could buy them - but this is the thrill of the hunt. It just feels good to do something and find a score.

I was disappointed that in the box (plus another 10 rolls) of dimes, I didn't find anything. That was a big hassle to get, and to not find anything kinda sucked. I realize it happens but I'd rather my second box have been a skunk than my first.

So again - for me, pennies are fun to go through. Does it make financial sense? I'm not sure. I'm saving out the copper, and have several pounds of it. Maybe that will be a good thing some day. Certainly it'll hold its value more than having $15 in paper money. Was it fun? Yeah it was fun. I now have a little jar with wheat pennies, canadians, the norwegian, some foreign money I've picked up along the way, some tokens - everyone needs a cool little coin jar.

To me it was just a really fun hobby. Cheap (free) to pick up a $25 box of pennies, or four, or like a guy that had come in the same day I picked up one at a certain bank, he'd picked up 8 boxes. That would be just $200, which you'd later get back - but how much entertainment would it be? That's 8-12 hours of something (semi)productive to do - I thought it was fun.

The idea of getting an IH, or with dimes a Mercury - WOW! That'd be so great!

Also, found plenty of mid-seventies s mint marks, as we're in Salt Lake area.

Have a good day. HH.

welcome to the hobby... i find it amazing to find old coins in circulation... but hard to get banks to co operate for me :(

Yeah, it can be a lot of fun. Dumping the coins is always a hassle, even with a small amount.
Also, everyone thinks you are crazy....I guess I am though...
