If you see the one that is buy it now for $8500, there is rim damage on the front and back. Also look at the 7, appears to be to much silver buildup in that area. There are to many raised areas on that coin and I am afraid that it is one of the many 40 year old counterfeits. Not to mention the fact that it has been cleaned. Just look at he eagles wings all built up, it appears that this one was not caught by the grading service. Buildup occurs when the coins are cast from a mold.

I stand by my estimation of AU-53 for Neil....... It is a much nicer coin than this slabbed ebay unknown. Not to mention Neils is a "rare coin" allowing grading to even be a little more forgiving. AU-55 or better?

Do you think you'll be sending it to PCGS? Seems like there's a chance to make it in a "problem-free" holder.

Exactly! You'd just be paying to hear something you don't want to hear nor care about.

I was thinking more along the lines of protection and security than the grading aspect. The grade really is inconsequential here.

Found my 1/2 dime a couple of years ago here in LAC Township in a field loaded with colonial coins,buttons etc.dont know the variety.welcome to the NJ 1795 HALF DIME CLUB!

There have been a few that top this, although I must admit it has been a while. One that comes to mind is the 1792 Half Disme, the true Holy Grail of American metal detecting. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,54405.0.html

I was so excited about the Half Dime, I forgot to check my "goodie bag". I remembered that I had a gold plated ring, but as I was looking through the modern coins that I found that day, I realized I had also found my first Shield Nickel!

Neil, I was thinking that it looks like Southern New Jersey aka SOUTH JERSEY is the king of old Half Dime finds. As far as I know, pinebarrens1 a few years back found a holed 1794 Half Dime. Pigeonman found his 1795 Half Dime in 2007, some guy named Neil found a 1795 in 2011 and don't forget that fellow SJMDC club member Jim M. found that 1792 Half Disme several years back in a South Jersey farm field. Maybe my turn is coming soon.

That red background sure brings out that coin! I do know of one that was dug at an old tavern site in Northern NJ, so maybe the entire state of NJ is the capital of half dimes.
