Hey everyone!
I decided to go to the beach after work today. When I saw there were a lot of deep scallops (bowls) on the beach today from cross-cut SE winds, I decided that it was a good time to go for an outing-- it paid off pretty nicely! I found a slew of miscellaneous items including a gold earring that was stamped "BAB 14KT", a bunch of pieces of junk jewelry that are / were gold plated, 2 foreign dimes from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, many U.S. clad coins, a rusty key, etc. I did some cursory research on the maker's mark, and I believe it belongs to a jeweler called B.A. Ballou & Co.-- correct me if I'm wrong. Ironically, I didn't find the earring inside one of the scallops, but rather sitting in a crevice, carved along an exposed portion of reef on the beach full of big shells. It seems that the reef acted as a natural sluice. The surf was too choppy for me to detect in, but the waves were powerful enough to force sand and shells above the reef, before the water would drizzle back into the ocean along multiple streams. The earring pinged on my excalibur like foil would, but as a perfect, mellow, buttery tone. Overall, a nice, productive day, and I learned something new! Unfortunately, the earring is hollow, hence why it is 1-2g, but hey! Gold is gold!
