Zephyr, great link. I also think 1 escudo Sevilla mint with Gothic P. I'm not sure about the S looks
too thick from the ones I have seen and of concern is the press lines around the Shield.
Would like to see more Photos.

US 1/4 is 24.3 mm
Your coin "maybe a smidgon smaller" than a quarter.
Sounds like the coin represents a 2-escudo--at least as to its diameter.

Between 1516 and 1772, the standard weight for a 1/2 escudo was 1.6141 grams; for the 1-escudo: 3.2282 grams. Your piece is 39% overweight for a 1/2 escudo and 31% underweight for a 1-escudo. The stardard gold fineness for either coin is 22k (0.917). IMO, the diameter gives me less concern than the weight and fineness.

So we seem to have a 2 escudo diameter doubloon that is very thin and severely underweight. Am I correct?

Do you see a seam on the edges? A cast replica will usually have a noticable seam where the two halfs of the mold seperate.

Originals were hammered but replicas are usually cast.

no there are no seams a jewler looked at it under 30x and said it looks real to him but he,s no expert, but he said its not plated also.

Those "line effects" can also occur in casting when part of the metal cools some before additional metal comes into contact with it. However, it could also be a stress fracture due to impurities in the coin's alloy, or even a "line effect" that was present in the coin planchet before striking (or a combination of the two.)
I'm not an expert in this stuff, so I'd recommend finding a real one....

Well nobody verified my summation as to whether this is a 2 escudo size but very thin and severely underweight. If this is true, my guess would be it was made for jewelry purposes. Some more pics will help. The shield side pic is good but the first pic is a little blurry.

You can send a pic with the exact diameter and weight to Sedwick and he will respond. They are the experts. Forget about pawn and jewelry shops. They can only tell you if it is solid gold. Good luck. I hope it is somehow genuine. I just dont know.

Those "line effects" can also occur in casting when part of the metal cools some before additional metal comes into contact with it.

In casting defect terminology that is known as a "cold shut" (in case anyone is interested).

I think this is closer to a 2 Escudo in diameter. It should weigh over 6 grams. It must be extremely thin.

Replicas falling under the 1973 Hobby Protection Act must have COPY written on it somewhere. Look carefully to see if it was removed. This Act was amended in 1988. http://www.coinlink.com/Resources/coinage-acts-by-congress/1973-hobby-protection-act/
Or maybe because it is so thin or made for jewelry purposes, it doesnt have to comply.

Too bad you cant find someone with a test kit over 18K.

just to let everyone know i talked to the folks at sedwicks and they looked at the photos. they said that as far as they can tell the coin looks real to them and that it has been clipped. coin should be worth from 300.00 to 400.00 so i think i did o.k. for 110.00 at an auction. if i sell i will let buyer know it,s been clipped

Clipped? It looks real to me too but did you tell them the weight? You mean the bulk of the coin was removed and the two thin faces sandwiched back together? Is that possible?

He is the expert but it is not apparent in your pictures how thin this coin is. I just dont understand how you can clip over 4-1/2 grams from a 6-1/2 gram coin. As long as you told him the weight and diameter.

Your coin is 2.2 grams. How has it been severely clipped and barely noticeable? We cannot see how thin this coin in the pics without a side view. Something doesnt add up or I am missing something. Can a coin be clipped in the center?

i think it has somthing to do with that year coin. like i said on his site you can look at coins from that time period and on his site he mentioned that some veriaties were thin so that may have somthing to do with the weight on that coin. when i get a chance i will try to get a side veiw of the coin for ref. thanks again for the intrest

That would be great news if thats true. I really hope for you. But why are we guessing? The side view picture was for Sedwick, not me. My only question is this: Did you tell Sedwick that your coin is only 2.2 grams? ...yes or no?
