Had a rare morning to hunt. I decided to chase a new dot on one of my early maps. After discovering a couple of early cabin site last year I'm always on the hunt for them. They have no cellar hole and not a sign of a home ever being there. Always virgin and usually quite productive. It took me some time to get on this place but eventually I nabbed the guts of a shoe buckle then a few other decent finds. A beautiful rat tail with a dog nose handle. I also pulled a massive 1734 Portuguese copper. It's a ten reis and is 31 mm. Pretty decent condition as well. Shoe buckle frame, and a few other bits. Then I spent a short time at another cabin site I've hunted before. Pulled a couple of thimbles and a nice early pewter button with a 6 point star inside a 6 point star. Hope to get out again soon. Good luck out there guys. I added a pic of the coin next to a DB for size comparison

Good spots are too hard to find. And if one person tells one person, and so on, they are all lost to you. That copper is just fine. You won't find anything in that condition here in Jersey, as the fertilizer does them in! Well, once in a great while you will find a good one, but rarely. Good to see you out again. Makes me want to go again! Happy hunting Abe.

I heard Abe blindfolds those guys he takes hunting with him and makes them wear earmuffs en-route. Then he has a flashy stick to erase their memory like in the movie Men in Black.

I'm in Jersey too OJG and have the same problem with condition. Unless the coppers were found next to the home and away from a field. Even the coins Abe says look terrible are better that 90% of mine. Lol.

That coin is a giant green monster! Wow.

Very nice shoe buckles too.

Best of luck to you sir!

Thank you CT. Biggest coin I've ever unearthed by far. Since I'm not lucky enough to find silver dollars or 8 reales

Whoa that is a big old coin and some nice colonial recoveries. Sounds like you have an old map with "dots" that no one else is pursuing. (The best kind of map for sure...) Be safe out there and congrats on your finds!!

Thanks buddy. I've found some incredible old maps. The oldest is 1688. I think a lot of people don't even consider these super old maps or sites. Which is great for me

Whatever you're using for a site sniffer is still working like a charm buddy. Not the quantity that you'd like to see, but the quality is definitely there as usual. Love that copper, and it's in superb shape. Dan's buddy pulled a similar one out of the water this week, but yours is in far superior condition. I've never been able to put a coil over one of those monsters. And then the obligatory whole spoon .... ho hum :laughing7:. Joking aside, that's another great example to add to your already awesome colonial spoon collection. Cool little star button too. I'd say you have quite a productive day (or morning). Hope you can get back out again soon man.

Thanks my good man. Shocked to hear that you haven't found something lol. Most of the sites are similar up there in that they weren't around long. About every 20 or so years the natives wiped this entire area out. Literally burned every home flat

I just told you yesterday that Dan's buddy dug one of those this week :dontknow:. Get with it man .....

Joey get with it???? Like that will ever happen Bill lol

That coin is pure lunacy...enough copper in that to plumb a bathroom. Outstanding

Thanks so much Ken. Def a big boy. Always nice to put something new in the collection

I was just looking at Portuguese Reis coins the other day while trying to ID the copper that was found by Rustic.

Now you found one, and a really sweet one too! Nice job, that thing is huge and awesome.

It's funny how those things seem to work my friend. Happy to have something new

wow, that coin should have been a banging signal as big as it is. wonderful finds as usual, finds that would truly make anyone's day(especially mine LOL)

I can count on one hand the number of 90+ signals that have been good targets on my T2. This is on that short list

Awesome finds, Abe! Everything looks good, too, even that large cent still has some detail. Glad you were able to get out for a hunt. -Lisa & John

Thanks guys. Nice to get em in good condition. The beauty of hunting in the woods and next to creeks in sandy soil

Great finds! I like that big Reis especially. Only ever found one but its shot. 1764 I think.

Nice to get a non British colonial for sure

What a great hunt! That copper is massive ( and in pretty great condition too)! You sure do have a way of sniffing out productive colonial sites. Congrats.

I strike out sometimes but when I find these cabin sites they are always virgin and normally quite productive

Joey get with it???? Like that will ever happen Bill lol

Put your bifocals on Mr. Bill, I said POSTED!! I listen to you every day when you tell me awesome Dan And his buddy are doing, don't worry :)

Ha ha great line there ZK! With the price of copper these days that thing would be worth a lot even if you sold it as scrap! Great find, Abe. You sure make your limited opportunities count.

Awesome finds! I don't get on here much anymore but it looks like I need to!

Great research! I have never found a complete rat tail spoon!

You gotta love the cabin sites. As you posted, they're very hard to find but when you do the payoff is usually well worth the effort-and your latest site is no exception. Very nice pewter spoon and of course the copper and interesting button. Congratulations for adding another productive old site to your GPS map. :icon_thumleft::icon_thumright:
