Had a rare morning to hunt. I decided to chase a new dot on one of my early maps. After discovering a couple of early cabin site last year I'm always on the hunt for them. They have no cellar hole and not a sign of a home ever being there. Always virgin and usually quite productive. It took me some time to get on this place but eventually I nabbed the guts of a shoe buckle then a few other decent finds. A beautiful rat tail with a dog nose handle. I also pulled a massive 1734 Portuguese copper. It's a ten reis and is 31 mm. Pretty decent condition as well. Shoe buckle frame, and a few other bits. Then I spent a short time at another cabin site I've hunted before. Pulled a couple of thimbles and a nice early pewter button with a 6 point star inside a 6 point star. Hope to get out again soon. Good luck out there guys. I added a pic of the coin next to a DB for size comparison

I was just looking at Portuguese Reis coins the other day while trying to ID the copper that was found by Rustic.

Now you found one, and a really sweet one too! Nice job, that thing is huge and awesome.
They come in three's! So where the last one coming from?
Rat Tail Dog nose? This is all greek to me. Someone enlighten me? Por Favor

Very cool. I dug a Ten Reis a few years back. The signal nearly blew my ears off :laughing7: Yours is in great shape.

So the term "rat tail" refers to the long narrow connection at the heel of the bowl that resembles a rats tail. The term "dog nose" refers to the shape at the top of the handle.

Not at home so I stole this pic from an old Tnet post as it shows both quite well

The coin found by Rustic turned out to be from colonial era French Guiana. I looked at a bunch of different coins trying to figure it out, including the Portuguese Reis.

So, Abe's coin is the only Portuguese copper I've seen posted on here in...well ever I think.

I'm sure in those days that huge coin stood out like a fly
On a wedding cake.
Nice hunt

Great finds - nice to see.

Very nice old copper Abe, congrats on the recovery. Really liking the rich patina on the copper.

Nice early button buddy. Like I was saying the other day, I have one with a matching back. But, of course, the front of yours has a star-in-star design.

Here's mine and it's a favorite. The reis is outstanding and I'm happy it came out so well. From the dirty pics it looked iffy, but you have a good cleaning touch bud. As for the dog-nose-rat-tail spoon F U ABE!!!!!!!!!
I don't know anyone with a dug (and complete) spoon collection like yours.

Congrats on a successful one

Fantastic hunt! :notworthy:

Love the old coppers and relics! :icon_thumleft:

That copper is awesome! Great hunt!

I'll take quality over quantity every time Abe- 1734 Portuguese copper is certainly a coin you don't see often, but the intact rat tail spoon is also a great save. Hopefully you've just scratched the surface on that cabin site.

Great hunt bud:thumbsup: You're the only person I've seen dig whole pewter spoons multiple times:headbang: Love it! Do you do anything to preserve them? ( in case I ever find one in 1 piece :laughing7:)

Great copper man! We have been chasing a few "cabin" sites as well, but have struck out so far! Good luck and HH!

Man! What a hunt! A non British-US 1700's copper is still on my bucket list. And this one is in a great shape! Awesome hunt, congratulations! That site sure looks promising.

Thanks buddy. I'm guessing you will certainly find your non British early copper one day

Of course you found a whole dog nosed spoon!

That Portuguese copper is really cool Abe and one I don't remember ever seeing posted. 31mm is massive.

Yep it's a big old coin buddy. Those complete spoons are like wheat pennies where I live lol

I'll hunt with you anytime too AHAB. You're famous around those thar parts up in Maine. I hear people talking about ya in my circles, but nobody knows whatcha look like bub. Kind of like the giant blue Lobsta' everyone says is out there. Some say you hunt with a few guys but nobody knows much bout them either. The best hunters seem to move in the shadows and nobody really knows much about them.

Nice pewter button and spoon bub. That dog-nose is not an easy feat, even in pieces.

Ha I always enjoy your responses. Where exactly do you live in Maine? If ya don't mind my asking.
At the risk of sounding like a selfish miserable ******* I'll explain why I hunt solo. There's actually a few reasons. I have a good friend here in Maine who's a very successful treasure hunter. When I first started this hobby I watched him have a very nasty exchange with somebody that he had hunted with. He rarely hunts with anybody but accepted an invitation to hunt with this guy. They got together and enjoyed the day hunting but neither found much of anything. The site was a spot that anybody can hunt. It wasn't some amazing secret permission or anything like that. Fast forward a few weeks or a little longer. On a public forum that guy absolutely blasted my buddy for not inviting him to one of his sites. It got really ugly and it stuck with me. I basically decided at that point that I would research my ass off and find my own sites and never put myself in a position where somebody could accuse me of using them for their sites or not reciprocating enough or not taking them to my best sites. I started this hobby to be therapeutic and peaceful. It's a way to escape all of the damn drama that seems to come with this world these days. So I go as far off the beaten path as I can. That brings me to another reason I don't invite people. Most of my sites take a lot of effort to get to. I kayak, hike and climb steep cliffs to get to some of these spots. One day I hiked 18 miles round trip and didn't find a damn thing lol. Im guessing 98% of intelligent people wouldn't want to go to most of my spots. It's a hell of a lot of effort and it's not always worth it. To me it's just part of the process. Eliminating a site is just a step towards getting to the next great site. A couple years ago I decided to invite a couple of guys from Tnet that I've talked to a lot to come to Maine and hunt. They both live a long way away and there's no danger of them going to my sites with out me or anything like that. These two wouldn't anyway but I'm sure you get my point. I don't go hunt anybody else's sites and I likely never will. I find great joy in the research and finding these amazing colonial sites that nobody else has discovered.
I realize this was a bit long winded but the point is I go to great lengths to avoid any drama sneaking into the hobby that I love and am so passionate about. I've seen way too many horror stories, hurt feelings and friendships destroyed. I work 70-80 hours a week normally and on the rare days I can hunt I just want to put myself deep in the woods by myself and enjoy the peace of nature. Maybe I am a selfish ******* lol

Well said. Back in Michigan, I would take people to my spots and watch them find awesome stuff...but when it was their turn to pick, it was always a public park. Not that I'm complaining, but for the amount of effort I put into research, it gets old being the only one who does. My hunting buddy here in Maine is another story. We alternate. I pulled that Bust dime at his spot last week..but last fall he pulled a 1754 Dutch copper and 179? French Copper at my spot. It's give and take, dual research efforts. Otherwise it's no fun. And I get just as much pleasure watching him pull awesome stuff from one of my researched sites than if I had pulled it. It's about unearthing the history. Keep the good finds coming!
