I braved the weather this afternoon and met up with Jersey Ben again at the soccer field. My friend Joe met up with us. He is mainly a beach hunter, but conditions have not been great at the Shore this winter so I invited him to try some turf hunting. He showed me some great beaches last summer and I found a lot of gold when I was with him, so it was the least I could do.

We all started digging buttons right away, but I was the first to get a coin signal. It turned out to be a Draped Bust half cent, my second this year! It looks to be 1800, but I can't be too sure. This soil is rough on the coppers!

Less than a minute later, Joe called me over to watch him dig a shallow quarter signal. Around 3 inches down was a Large Cent, his very first! I gave him a pat on the back, congratulated him and got back to business. It took me about a minute before I realized that the LC was a bit smaller in diameter than a typical Large Cent, so I went back over and asked to take another look. I could not see any detail, but it was definitely a bit thicker and smaller. I told him to be careful because I thought it was a special find that we needed to take a closer look at back at the car.

Sure enough when we got back to the car we saw what I suspected. Something very special...

I dug a bunch more relics and buttons, including the Grand Army of the Republic button (found inside the goalies net!), a wire rope ring, and what looks like some kind of boot tap or something similar. The clog clasp was dug on my last outing but I did not know what it was until I saw Don's post.

Joe does not post on the forum but said I could go ahead and post his find. I took the photos before it was cleaned. There was no visible detail on the back, and he said it is too corroded to get any detail. He can make out the word "Hundred" on the edge.

I am posting the photos he sent me after some mild soaking, but he is new to taking photos of coins.

Talk about beginner's luck!

Neil, That was a nice find for your friend. Is he ready to give up the beach??? LOL. I went to a local field near me and when I got there, I saw a huge sign: Field Closed, Keep Out! Oh well.

Thanks Gary

Gary, he was using a White's MXT. An impressive detector, without all the bells and whistles! He had the Super 12 coil on his.

Joe asked which coil he should bring and I told him the big coil would be no problem. The site it clean! A few trashy spots, but no can slaw and no modern coins!

Congratulations on some very nice finds.

I'd like to play on that soccer field sometime with my Nautilus DMC IIb. LOL!
