Draped Bust Cent - 1798?

I detected a former homesite in the woods yesterday. After two hours of searching, I was soaked in sweat and scratched up by thorns, but at least I had found a large cent, or what is left of one anyway. It appears to be a 1798 U.S. Draped Bust Cent. It is badly corroded, but I am still happy to have dug it. I have attached photos of a non-dug example for those unfamiliar with the coin. This site has produced a bunch of buttons and several coppers; however, I had no other keepers this time around. Good luck, keep cool, and happy hunting!

You definitely earned that! Hopefully no ticks. As I drive around the northshore here in Massachusetts I see alot of stone walls and wonder what may be buried there but it's the ticks, flies, mosquitoes and of course the heat that keep me from going...I guess I'm a bit of a snowflake. Well at least you weren't skunked and I look forward to seeing it cleaned up. Nice recovery!

Thanks! Yes … the ticks are scary and the diseases they carry have me second guessing these wooded and overgrown spots. I wear light clothes treated in Permethrin, apply bug spray, tuck my pant legs into my socks, check frequently, and hope for the best. The mosquitos haven’t been too bad yet. As for the coin, that is as cleaned up as it is going to get, as further effort will just take what is left of the detail off 😞. Stay safe and good luck out there!

Thanks! I don’t think I am brave, just a little insane and driven somewhat recklessly by this wildly addictive hobby 😁. I am over 60 now, so AC, coffee, and scrolling is looking more and more appealing ☕️☕️☕️.

lenmac65, congrats on finding a keeper for the day, and showing persistence and a little insanity pays. The heat dome will eventually pass (I hope) and there is a lot of good advice on the thread re: dealing with the ticks, etc. Keep on keeping on!​

Sounds like you are doing everything right. Having a cat I'm reluctant to spray anything on my clothes...
