Draped Bust Cent - 1798?

I detected a former homesite in the woods yesterday. After two hours of searching, I was soaked in sweat and scratched up by thorns, but at least I had found a large cent, or what is left of one anyway. It appears to be a 1798 U.S. Draped Bust Cent. It is badly corroded, but I am still happy to have dug it. I have attached photos of a non-dug example for those unfamiliar with the coin. This site has produced a bunch of buttons and several coppers; however, I had no other keepers this time around. Good luck, keep cool, and happy hunting!

Another great find "lenmac65" ! I think you're right on with the 1798 date. If it were a 1793, the last number would be flatter on top. Yours is curved like an 8. Cheers !!

It looks as bad as iron/zinc ones of late stampings. But since it has been in the ground for so long, it is a wonder it is still findable. Congrats in the find.

Yup, 1798, A 1793 would be a Flowing Hair or Liberty Cap.

Thanks! It is hard to read, but I am pretty confident on the 1798 date too. The ribbon on the back of her head was a tell-tale sign to me that It was a draped bust coin, which were first minted in 1796. Thanks again.

Thanks! The prospect of finding silver is what motivates me to keep going there. Unfortunately, it is super overgrown, so much of the dirt is beyond my capabilities and patience.

You definitely earned that! Hopefully no ticks. As I drive around the northshore here in Massachusetts I see alot of stone walls and wonder what may be buried there but it's the ticks, flies, mosquitoes and of course the heat that keep me from going...I guess I'm a bit of a snowflake. Well at least you weren't skunked and I look forward to seeing it cleaned up. Nice recovery!
