Awesome finds and congrats to your buddy on the 1796 and 1799 Draped Bust Large Cent finds! Definitely Banner worthy. Can you post pics of the Reverses of both coins? There is a definitely a lot of Iron in the soil where they were found! Is it natural Iron from deposits or unnatural due to man and possibly left-over from the Civil War? I ask as it appears that the coins were in contact with degrading Iron as in something made of Iron that is rusting away (decomposing).
Those coins have a strange looking and almost identical patina. Where were they found - field, woods, water, etc? Almost have a burnt look to them. Very nice regardless.
Wow both draped bust! That 1799 is a big money coin. Hopefully it can be cleaned some more to get rid of that gunk. Will need some careful hands on that one
Great old coins that will require great experience in restoring. I agree if you had of found them they would probably make banner. I do not think they allow non members or first post members to make banner though.
But we still appreciate the view!
Happy Memorial Day.
I found a 96 last weekend ! A 99 would have been supersweet ! THE GOOD DATE ! Will get this coin to the top ! Still good money for an AG 3 grade ! And you have that at least ! Conservation looks interesting and possibly tricky ! Good luck ! MaineRelic
