I usually just lurk here and don't post, but I'm excited to have found a 1797 LC today on an old unmaintained road near my home. Just wanted to share a couple of photos. IMG_20150428_151520_941-1.webpIMG_20150428_151307_765-1.webpIMG_20150428_151248_450-1.webpIMG_20150428_151511_203-1.webp

What a beautiful copper. That would have made my month! Congrats!

What an awesome specimen!

Nice coin! Prime example of how great they look when not found in a field attacked by fertilizers. Drop that baby in some extra virgin olive oil for about four days and be amazed!

Ohhhh that's nice! Congrats on the draped bust

That's one of the better(and I mean better) early large cents I've seen posted in a while!
That's one to be proud of!

Glad you decided to come "out of the woodwork" and show us this awesome coin. Now you have to keep finding and posting.

Congrats. .She is in great shape.
That should clean up real nice..
Stop stalking and start posting. .lol.

Welcome to T'Net with your first post. And that awesome LC is a great way to start.

Truly an awesome specimen! Be very careful getting the mud off. If the surface holds true is a high $$$ key date copper! nice details

I don't plan to clean it until I have it looked at by someone that knows more about it than me. I believe it is a 1797 with a 1795 reverse.

wow that is a pretty coin :)

Great looking copper! Well done on the recovery.

Nice seeing a 1797 posted, usually 1798's prevail, much more common year found. I tried attributing the variety, based on the date spacing and on the reverse from what I see on some details that do show, my intelligent guess is a Sheldon 136. http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s136.jpg I would go ahead and clean it as good as you can for your own personal collection, it is not one of the bigger money varieties........... If more details showed on the reverse ( number of berries on each side and if could see some of the leaf positions better, I would be than probably 100% sure of the variety, but S-136 is closest I come to with what details that I see........

Nice large cent, I have had the chance of finding a couple like that, non from the 1700's though :(

How did you clean it? I'm guessing EF Details, a couple hundred bucks easy

Not as nice as yours though. I cleaned these with a wet Q-Tip and a short olive oil soak.
