I usually just lurk here and don't post, but I'm excited to have found a 1797 LC today on an old unmaintained road near my home. Just wanted to share a couple of photos. IMG_20150428_151520_941-1.webpIMG_20150428_151307_765-1.webpIMG_20150428_151248_450-1.webpIMG_20150428_151511_203-1.webp

Nice large cent, I have had the chance of finding a couple like that, non from the 1700's though :(

How did you clean it? I'm guessing EF Details, a couple hundred bucks easy

Not as nice as yours though. I cleaned these with a wet Q-Tip and a short olive oil soak.

I haven't cleaned it. I just wiped the dirt off.

Nice seeing a 1797 posted, usually 1798's prevail, much more common year found. I tried attributing the variety, based on the date spacing and on the reverse from what I see on some details that do show, my intelligent guess is a Sheldon 136. http://www.largecents.net/collection/coinpics/s136.jpg I would go ahead and clean it as good as you can for your own personal collection, it is not one of the bigger money varieties........... If more details showed on the reverse ( number of berries on each side and if could see some of the leaf positions better, I would be than probably 100% sure of the variety, but S-136 is closest I come to with what details that I see........

Not sure about the number of berries. I can tell that each side of the wreath ends with a single leaf. Thanks for your input.

Excellent Draped Bust!!! Congrats!

That's a beauty! Glad you shared with us. I've got two 97s and they aren't nearly as nice as yours.

Yeah real nice shape, I'd post that all day and twice on sunday!, very cool

Way to go! Sweet LC!:occasion14:

I will stick with it being the S-136 variety, and if you take a wet q-tip to the top right leaf you will see it is not a single leaf.

She's a beauty! Congrats!!

Oh, I can't wait to see the results, that coin is going to look amazing, that is all I know!

Great shape considering the year...soil was kind to it... congrats

Sweet find, that's a very good quality example

Please...please...please never wipe the dirt off of a coin or rub dirt off with a finger as this leaves unknown amounts of scratches on them. If you can't wait to see a Date and details until you get home, then take a couple of bottles of water with you to rinse the coin off.

Nice coin, congrats and welcome to the forums!
