Got out to a newly discovered colonial plantation. The plantation dates back to the late 1600s and I believe was abandoned or burned in the 1800s. Anyways I had found some revolutionary war era buttons and a piece of a trunk plate along with a musket ball. I went out today after the rain and dug a bunch of iron until I decided it was time to leave. I was swinging desperately on my way back to the car when I got a nice signal that definitely was not iron. I popped the plug and saw a big disc staring at me. I picked it up and brushed the dirt off. I saw the back of this beautiful coin and started yelling and punching the air. I couldn't believe it. My first 1700s coin and it's a big, heavy silver one!!! I'm still so excited! Here she is...

If anyone can tell my why there is a swirl on top of the crown instead of the usual cross it would be muchly appreciated.
Here's a button and a piece of a trunk plate from the same site.

OMGosh, you really hit the jackpot. Wow! The button almost looks like it has small jewels. I'd wanna hit that place some more!

Great find! Haven't a clue what the swirl on top of the crown is... Thanks for sharing...

I hope all your luck rubs off on me....

CONGRATS

Congrats on finding the Big 8, they are an awesome coin.
ZDD

That's awesome! Brings back some fond memories...my first 8 reale was also a 1798! Congrats!

killer coin...I believe it was originally the typical cross, though might be where a person tried to hole the coin with a knife blade or tool (twisting/screwing) as it also looks as if there is a similar mark on the reverse atop the head.

the brass piece is part of a furniture plate.

nice stuff man

Thanks guys! It's a new site very close to my house. I always wondered where the original house was and then that terrible HOA meeting gave me that map. Glad I saw that!

Thats A great 8R, i looked it up in "Standard Catalog of world coins, SPAIN,PORTUGAN & THE NEW WORLD" and i found the coin but no mention of your error coin. if that bothers you dont want it by all means put it back, Haha,
