Wow, what a hunt. Hit my trusty field this evening and hit the jackpot. Second target ten minutes into hunt I dig an Indian Head. I'm thinking great, another 190something Indian. Indian heads just don't cut it when you have been digging Large Cents...that is unless it's an 1877! Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the second 7 pop out from the dirt. I had to go back to the car to get my camera for this one. Well I got to click a few more pics ten minutes later as I pulled a 1798 Draped Bust Cent and shortly after that an 1801. I have found 7 LC from this field...5 in a an acre square. The 1877 in the same general area as well. Can't wait to get back out there, I'll need a new shovel though as the spade broke in half. I dug the last coin with the handle!

Yep, get that 77 cleaned up a bit with nice pic and it should be on top!!! Banner hunt all the way. Congrats. jgas

I'm almost afraid to do anything to the 77. I don't want to ruin it. Any suggestions?

If you have a Harbor Freight close by, they have a nice little shovel. I think it was less than $10. I've been digging with mine for a little while now.

I guarantee it's not as good as the relic pro, but in the meantime, it would be better than the one you have. Thanks to Neil for posting that link. I got to get one of those in the future. Love those LC's and that 1877 is an awesome find.

Nice finds. The Large Cents would have been a good outing, but to add an 1877 Indian !!!! Makes it a great day in my book.

dang that 77 looks sharp man! nice find!!

If it does not appear to have any pitting on either side. A nice little bath in hot peroxide should do the trick. Just take your time and let it sit in the bath for about 10 to 15 seconds, pull it out and examine it for the pitting. Use a jewelers loop and you will see any pitting. If no pitting, then let it soak again and repeat until all of the crud comes off. Be careful not to take that beautiful patina off. Remember that it is a key date coin and worth anywhere from $500 to $1,200 depending on condition. Hope that helps. Its a killer find for sure and deserves a slot at the top! jgas

Great hunt! 1877 is a Wish Lister for me! :notworthy: Congrats......Hogge

I guess good things do come in three's. :icon_thumleft:

Great 1877. Don't do anything rash with cleaning. Just take plenty of time to decide.

Get a U.S. military shovel if you want to only own one for the rest of your life.

Or...get a lifetime warranty Fiskars for a fraction of the cost of a Predator if you want a long handled or T-handled digger.

Cheers,

Buck
