Went down to HeavyMetalNuts neck of the woods today. The first sites we attempted to locate was in an area that appeared to be an old junkyard from the 50's that was "cleaned" up. Trash EVERYWHERE! nOT A real inviting place for a colonial detectorist. However, Just around the corner was a nice center hearth colonial cellar hole! This place has been hunted pretty heavily in the past, but I managed to squeek out this Large Cent. This old copper was laying in a pile of nails....prolly the reason it still remained. Weirdest signal ever for a copper, bouncing around all over the place...pulltab, iron, zinc, quarter...I started chucking the old spike nails into the cellar hole and was ready to cover up the hole and move on....I ran my pinpointer through the dirt just to be sure and there she was. The place was pretty quiet, I ended up pullin an old heel plate and a umbrella piece..parasail? The next couple of sites were miserable....the mosquitos were on the loose and very hungry. Once the bug sprays wears off the buffet begins. I got a nice Cloaker button to end the hunt with......I should have left the Large cent alone....I was sure it was in brilliant shape....but after the patina flaked off I soon realized she was pretty haggard. The reverse on the other hand is MINT! thanks for lookin.

You might not think she's nice, Sniffy. But compared to my 1798, she's close to mint! I can barely make out the 8 on my coin's date.

You can see the big cud to Liberty's right obverse. I bet there's a variety associated with that big a cud.

WTG!

Nice getting a fairly decent 1798, looks like it is a Sheldon 187 which is the commonest variety for this year. I think your coin matches die state V, meaning it was getting near to the end of the life for that die, she was worn out! There is one later die state and the Breen book says that is very rare for that variety, but I cannot tell the difference from the descriptions in the book and the condition of your coin, so assuming it is die state V.

1798 is a very hard year, so many varieties, but with the rim break and what looks like the die break that is suppose to be there, fairly certain I nailed it.

Here is an example:

That is a beauty.

Pretty much how you want them to be condition wise.

Even in the example you posted the obverse is worn out compared to the reverse. The cud is the same...nice ID once again Don.

Nothin to sniff at......Sniffy.......:).......a nice coin. Yep, made the same mistake many times.
Looks great with the patina.....take it off, and you remove half of the top of the coin. I've kicked myself
a couple of times. lBut, didn't do it with a beautiful 1877 Indian cent.....and there must have been dirt still left
on the coin after I washed it a bunch of times......looked good for the first two/three years. I stuck it away,
when doing some traveling for Uncle Sammy, and found it.....or what remained of it. So, sometimes darned
if you do.....darned if you don't. Have to go with your gut feeling......or, better yet, send a nice coin away
to be professionally cleaned by one of the cleaning/grading services. Let them take the hit.
Good find. Keep 'em coming.

nice draped bust, Sniffy.
those are one of my favorite coins to find.

nice coin, that thing cleaned up pretty nice.
