Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Well I didn't find this metal detecting, but it's still awesome. Real shame there's a hole in it. Apparently my mom found it many years ago in a drawer in an old dresser or something and never really realized it was actually a coin or just never thought about it. I guess she came across it again and knew I was into coins and gave it to me and I freaked out lol. Man, I wish there wasn't a hole in it because it's beautiful. She told me she thought it was an 1899. Nope mom, try a hundred years earlier.

I've heard all sorts of things about why people punched holes in coins. I talked to a coin dealer here in town and he said people were afraid to lose their money when working in the field so they'd punch holes in them and string up their money. Or I've also heard of giving them to babies for teething, as well as the whole necklace charm thing. He also confirmed what I already suspected from my research and from where it was found, that it is in fact the real deal not a fake. I love this thing and I love the history I'd never sell it. I'm altogether very pleased.

haha It wasn't even her dresser. My mom works on a plantation and has ever since I can remember. Down here in the south it's kind of a thing that plantation owners give workers the option to live on the plantation if they want and for a while, we did stay out there off and on. The house was furnished and the dresser/cabinet/desk what ever it was was already there and it seemed to be old she said. My mom doesn't stay out there anymore, but she still works there. The house has since been completely remodeled and another employee is living there. I doubt they still have the piece of furniture. For all we know, it could have belonged to a previous employee or the owner herself I don't know, but she said the drawer was full of old junk. Nothing else as old and no other coins though. I believe I mentioned in a different post somewhere on here that there are several old home sites on the plantation's acreage as well as an old site that is confirmed to be an old stagecoach stop. I am very eager to search these sites when I get the chance. I have searched the stagecoach stop twice already and have found tons of old junk, but just junk.

What a beautiful coin.
