1801 Draped Bust "Triple Error"

I found this last weekend along with my first Half cent,an 1828. It's my first Draped Bust cent and the "3 error" type. (1/000 fraction-single stem on wreath-U in United is II) From what I've read it's a rare type and in E-40 Red Book lists it at $7500.00! Mines no where near E-40- but still the best coin I've found and my oldest American coin! The pics are'nt very clear-looks better in person-"Liberty" is more visable

Really nice find. You're looking at G-4 on grade. Don't think it would go to G-6. Severe pitting also, but this is expected on 95% of ALL ground found coppers. Still a great find for rarity. You have a Sheldon 219. The S-218 has both blunt "1"s in the date. You have a pointed first "1". Sheldon 219 is listed as "common". STILL A NICE FIND! :headbang: :headbang:

Re: 1801 Draped Bust "Triple Error"

THAT is one very neat coin !! I'm certainly not the last word on all those early , way numerous varieties , but my 1st impression tells me it was struck in a very worn , or broken die. (often you can even see the crack)............ I like it !!!

Re: 1801 Draped Bust "Triple Error"

There are actually 2 on EBAY right now that are VERY close in comparison to your coin. One is buy it now for 129.00 and the other is for 104.00. These coins were SOOO close in grade and condition I thought one of them was actually the one you had and you already listed it. One of them is EBAY #400221313215

Wow, that's an excellent find! I had two of these in comparable condition (G-VG with light corrosion) a few years back, and I got just over $100 each for them on eBay when I sold them. They are a very popular variety and not so easy to find despite the "common" rating.

Re: 1801 Draped Bust "Triple Error"

Very nice find! I found an 1801 LC exactly two weeks ago, unfortuately mine wasn't the error variety. I was just happy I could read the date :laughing7:

What's your half cent look like?

Nice old Copper!
The further back you go, the more errors you find, even wheats had a lot of errors released.
Quality control and inspection seems more rigorous these days :icon_scratch:
