1809 Half Cent, 1838 Not One Cent, Indian + flat button

I got out today for a couple hours. I hit a spot I've researched but never went to...but I had sent friends there a couple times with success. I had a few good targets and I went home very happy. The first target was an 1864 IHC, followed by a 1809 Half Cent .


Next came a big ol flat button then the "Not One Cent" hard times large cent token.
The coins were cleaned with the dry method. They're not in very good shape but I got dates from both.


interestingly the flat button still had thread crammed under the shank. That's always cool!

Well apparently they were circulated like monetary coppers so there's a bunch out there to find. They seem to come up a dozen or more times a year.

Sweet digs Scrappy! Both of those are still on my bucket list. Fun little story for ya. I have hunted two home steads that kinda merge together over 3-4 acres in a field. I have been there 50-60 times and have found a lot of coinage, CW store cards, a Counterfeit Seated Quarter, CW buttons and other cool stuff. I invited a friend of mine and his wife to go there with me and on their first hunt, Diane found a 1869 Two cent coin and a 1825 Half cent coin, neither of which I have found at this site, and I still haven't found a Half cent. Sweet finds and hope to see ya post more finds from this site, Congrats!

Thx Don. I am always ecstatic when a half cent pops out of the ground. The problem is all the ones I've found look like a cow chewed on them and pooped 'em out. Lol.

Oh man, that's a hard one to digest. What we find boils down to a zig instead of a zag, or a left step instead of a right step, angles, the day of the week, phase of the moon, and on...

I've had friends find lots of things I missed. Hell, CarolinaTom found a flying eagle cent in ground I went over 5-6 times. But he was a nice guy about it and sent me a t-shirt with a flying eagle penny to make me feel better(ie rub it in). Lol

Haha thx Brad. I wanted to do the trip south to hunt with you but unfortunately I needed a full day which I didn't have. I was able to break for two hours however and lucked out.

How many times can I tell you "awesome hunt"? Another great post Steve and you're really killing it man. To me, it looks like those two coppers are protected by a scale layer that might toothpick off to reveal a couple nice coins. I've had luck in the past with that concrete hard muddy scale layer before... maybe yours have a similar layer on them. Either way, those are two really nice coppers man.

The 1809 Half Cent is a very special coin to me. 22 years ago when I got my first metal detector (a Whites), the first target I dug in my front yard was this 1809 Half Cent... I didn't even know that coin existed when I dug it and needless to say, I was TOTALLY HOOKED on detecting. I became busy with other things in life for many years and didn't detect much, but always loved this hobby.

So I obviously love your 1809 Half Cent the most!

Great story! My first coin was an 1794 liberty cap large cent. I didn't know what it was but I also knew it was very special. Lol

Damn dude... That's an even more sick find. It's hard not to get addicted to this hobby when you start out like that. Ha. Guess we lucked out by fumbling into some good first finds. Ha

PS: I also remember having no clue and scrubbing that half cent with a toothbrush in the kitchen sink... Ugh
