1820 capped bust quarter, 1788 1/2 real

Today I soldiered up with deep and ventured to the colonial era woods I've been digging. Was a slow start with flat buttons and other items. I didn't bring any drinking water and was getting tired so I started back to my truck. On the road back I swept the coil as I walked . Hit a nice 12 45 and wow out pops a 1820 capped quarter in awesome condition. First capped I've ever dug. A few feet away I dug a worn 1788 1/2 real. Also ended with a total of 8 flat buttons. Arrrrrrr I loves me silverrrrrr. Thanks for looking.

what a beauty of a coin! Not too up to date on capped bust grading, but I'd think it would be a 40 or a 45 (details grade). maybe check the Heritage archives for similar coins. You can compare problem and problem free coins and get a rough grade value. Absolutely stunning find!

Q tip with water ..This coins poppin. Some better pics. Can anyone give me an idea on the grade

Ahhhhh don't ever clean with water and a q-tip or anything that might alter the surface! Hate to break the news and still a great find .... But not as great as it would have been if properly cleaned.

Like I said in my last post..it's fine..I have no intention of selling. My wife will probably sell it when I go where the coin was. There is NO damage to this coin from my Q TIP. I am completely OK with my method of removing dirt.

Congrats on an amazing coin find. There are alway a couple of serious coin collectors that will post about what to do and not to do with coins that we dig out of the ground. It's okay, they can't help it because it is what they are into. But most of us like to dig up old coins, clean them up, and display them in a 2x2 holder for our own enjoyment. Kind of gets old hearing the same soap box preaching but it will alway be the same. It's your coin now and you enjoy it however you want. Congrats again!

Amazing coin, congrats! When I dug my 1916D merc, i first let it soak in water to soften and loosen any dirt, that removed 95% of the dirt, then I laid it on a soft towel and used a wet Q-tip to dab up and down to slowly remove the dirt between the letters. I never rubbed the coin with the Q-tip. Once all the dirt was off I sent it in to be graded and it came back VG8 and was NOT MARKED CLEANED or enviromental damage. So yes it is possible to carefully remove the dirt if down slowly and carefully.
