So, I haven’t been doing much detecting but I have to get out at least once every week. In the spring I had gotten permission to hunt this 1820’s home. It is very close to where I live. We were told that a person had hunted the property before us and had found at least one Large Cent here.

Nate and I hunted the property 2 times in the spring. We found a few wheats, some relics and some clad. When we did hunt it our machines would be very noisy. The property is on a road that follows a ridge. The ridge was made by glacier deposits. The soil is very atypical of our area. Very sandy/rocky/mineralized. There is even a good portion of the property that is red dirt. Not good for detecting. During our second hunt there I started to get suspicious and I dug a little hole and buried a penny 3-4 inches deep and not one of my 4 detectors would pick it up! But if you want old, you have to hunt old sites.
So last Saturday after Nate’s race I told him I was going to hunt there and asked if he wanted to come. He thought it was a waste of time and tried to talk me into going somewhere else where he wanted to go. I told him to give me 45 minutes and I will be back and we will decide then. I started in the back of the property and worked very slow. I got some junk and then a good shallow signal. Dig the plug and it looks like a clad quarter.

Wipe some dirt and I see 1870 starting at me!

This got me excited. I searched the same area more and got two more coins that could not have been more than an inch deep. Two IH’s dated 1902 and 1894.
After cleaning up the stuff:

The 1870 Quarter was the first year issue with 900,000 minted. If it was US currency it would have been a seated quarter. That would have been very sweet.

So, no Large Cent but I was just as happy with the old silver.

Nice ! It pays to go with your gut fealing's sometimes ! I'm thinkin that there be more goodies there. ;D

Bob, I'd take that quarter over a large any day! In fact, I'll send you the key and a large for it! ;D. Great find!

Mirage, those are some sweet coins, love the Canadian! Bet your pal will go with you next time.

That quarter is awesome, great find. I would really mess with the adjustments on the detectors in that yard, it looks like a gold mine in the making...Ryan

Hey, you got your Old canadian silver quarter after all!!! Cool.

Even older then the 1911 that I was giving away in my contest that you were wanting but got the SLQ instead.

Great finds Bob, congrats!! Cool post!

Congratulations Mirage, nice finds!

For sure that huge 1820 sign on the house leaves no doubt about when the house was built

Happy Hunting,

lol. Girls don't have any influence on him at all at this stage in his life. ;) ;D He was just tired and hungry from his cross country meet. And of coarse there are those times that I come back with junk. :D

Romeo, you find some nice stuff. If you find a Seated Quarter I will trade you. ;D

Bob

A fast one it is! My larges are horrendous; I've found six or seven and they're all wretched, barely able to date.

Keep up that quest Bob!

Think of all the cool stuff you're going to find on the way!

Nice old Canadian silver!

Congratulations!

Nice finds and congrats on the Silver! HH, Mike

That is one sweet Canadian Quarter !!!! congrats on the Indains too. Great finds.

Fantastic Dig's Bob...

It great to see nice old coins come from our own backyard. Since we lack some history.

Would it be possible to get a bucket full of soil to take home and play with? Fine tune the detector a little?

I have two DD coils for the DFX if you want to give thoes a swing on that property..
