I thought I was finished with my 1800's cellar hole in the woods. Last month it yielded an 1833 LC and an 1861 IH plus a pile of neat relics but I figured it was time to move on when the signals dried up. Today I just got a feeling i should go back. I've been vacationing in Canada for a week (just some clad from the beach) and I was having withdrawl symptoms not having the chance to swing at an old site. Tonight i hiked back in to the woods to my old cellar hole and immediately got side tracked with picking and eating, by the handfulls, fresh raspberries!!! I didn't have my camera when I pinged a solid 79 vdi on my dfx at 5 inches. I KNEW it was an LC and i hesitated to dig right away cause i considered running home for my camera....not enough will power my friends, sorry,it had been a long dry spell....
Since i didn't have my camera i have to tell you it was a beautiful, Ohio summer evening. 80 degrees, low humidity. My fingers, then later my glove on my left hand were stained from picking and eating fresh raspberries as i swung my coil with my right. When I pulled that big coppa out of the ground i just stayed knelt down on my knees for a minute and took a look around at the woods surrounding me. No sounds of traffic,no signs of civilization, only birds singing in the background and I'm holding a coin fresh out of the dirt that someone could have dropped 171 years ago..... i can't seem to find the words to describe that feeling...thanks for havin a look and happy hunting!

great find there .

Very Nice, big congrats go out to you

Hells Yeah, Buddy! I *knew* that there would be another keeper in there for ya!

You actually have at least Two finds from the 1830's there--and the other is that button. "Scovills" with the "s" on the end is an 1830's backmark (1827-40). Cheers!

Nice that it still had a little gilding on it.

EXCELLENT photos--the coin turned out nice. I like the photo with the map backdrop. :)

I'm making a post too. Pretty skunky but fun for us today...

It is pure joy to pull a Large Cent from the ground. My 1812 and 1853 this year were my firsts 1800's finds...It is incredible and the reason behind our madness. Great find and I am sure you will get that feeling again real soon. Keep at it and Congrats my friend... ;D jgas

Sounds like you had a great evening detecting Jerry....Plenty of wild raspberries to eat ( I've chowed on many a raspberry at old sites myself :laughing1: ) while you detect in a peacefull setting , wildlife scenery ! Theres nothing like being at an old site and feeling the past history there and having a enjoyable time
I 'specially like the sites where its just you and NO civilazation to interfer , no one bothering ya asking silly questions or pestering you.

And old relics and a AWESOME Lg Cent to boot !

Cograts on a GREAT hunt and cool post !

Congrats on another great hunt Jerry
Those are three super finds. Love the LC and the gilt button.
That suspender clip is about the best one I have seen---Looks very old.

The only thing better than digging a Largie is digging one in secluded areas that were once populated. Two of my best condition cents were found 5 miles from the nearest modern road! No sound of freeway traffic, only birds and wind.

Excellent Large Cent, Jerry! Great story, too.

I agree, less civilzation is better than more when MDing.

Keep digging!
