notice the oval shape of the of the two "holes" in the 8. All the strikes I can find images of have very circular ones. Notice too how the top of the 9 matches the 8. Does anyone know if this is a common variety?

Looks like a 1819/8 variety

of course, my bad!

The "8" in your coin does look suspicious. Could it be counterfeit?

it isn't really worth the effort for that date

so do you suppose mine is a 9 over 8? I very much see the difference between mine and yours

The thin numeral 1s are what make me suspicious about authenticity. The one I posted and also the two the Pep posted all have thick 1s. Eye of Liberty also suspect.

I did some searching and found an 1819 similar to yours. Skinny 1s and kind of a funny looking eye on Miss Liberty. I’m no expert but your coin is looking better to me.

I got it in a Mexican auction for very little, and am giving it to a friend, (he collects every variety of all US coins). He is thinking of sending it off to have it vivified as a 9 over 8.

I got an ID on it... it is a large 9 over 8, Overton 105, VF obverse, EX reverse. It seems there are A LOT of 9 over 8 varieties, much more than a casual look on the internet shows.
