1842 LARGE

Greetings fellow dirt fishers,
It has been a long five weeks but with the January thaw I was able to get out and do some digging yersterday. I hunted the bean field again and found 1 wheatie, a few square nails, misc, and then dug this Large cent down about 6 inches. Sure was a great way to start the year.

The Cleaning


The first pics are after scrubbing it with ultrabrite toothpaste and a toothbrush.
Then I put it in a rock tumbler half full of white aquarium rock.
I put in one ounce of white vinegar and added water until it just reached the top of the rocks.
I tumbled it for 2 hours and it looked pretty good but had an orange color in a couple of spots. I then put it in hot peroxide for about an hour.
[I set a small ceramic bowl of peroxide in a crock pot to keep the peroxide hot and working.]
I then gave it a light coat of vaseline and wiped it off good.
I think I might try just the peroxide on the next one. Still experimenting.

Did they grow coins in those fields up there? You've been pulling out some great finds. Congrats on a nice LC there buddy.
Mine unfortunately was not so lucky. I've pretty much given up on getting a readable date off of it. Very frustrating since it was my first one.
Looking forward to seeing a lot of great finds from you this year Merf.
