KKC got out today and I found this 1847 Braided Hair large cent and Barber quarter. This is the 7th copper off of this farm.

Is it my imagination or was that coin intentionally hammered into an octagonal shape?

Both are nice finds!

They seemed to love to mutilate the coins ::), I have two Large Cents hammered similiarly, although Kyle's is a much neater job than the work done on my two.

I am pretty sure it was punched into an octogon shape to look just like the california gold coin that they had back in the day. That way they could pay off big debts and pretend it was a gold coin when it really was just worth 1 cent. :) Thats my guess :) Nice find! :)

Way to go Kyle. Love that green patina. I wish the coppers around came out looking like that. We call them 'greenies', but not sure why. They are rarely ever green.

I got an octagon shaped 'greenie' earlier in the season. But, it was so rough I'm not even sure if it's a LC or KG....

Keep 'em coming....

So you sound like you might know why someone would want to hammer their large cent into an octagonal shape...? Could it be what Detectingfreak said? And even then I don't see how that would fool someone...at least it could be dipped in gold or colored to resemble a gold coin. ???
Aaaanyway nice hunting guys.
