don't know what the shield thing is but the campaign medallion is really cool
Thanks! I searched the net last night and found out the badge is a civil war era dog tag. Here’s an undug example

Ten years too late .. 1875 isn't really Civil War Era nor is that a dog tag. It is a civilian patriotic ID fob/tag similar in nature to these, albeit a badge shape instead of oval or round. Cool find none the less.

Nice finds and a good looking permission. Might be more hiding around there. Good luck!

Todays hunt at an 1850 home netted some interesting finds.
A tombac, 1856 presidential campaign token, chunk of harmonica and an unknown badge. Anyone have any idea what the badge could be?
Very Cool!!! Congrats!!!

Im not saying you are wrong. I am aware the govt didn’t require soldiers to have dog tags till WW1 roughly and they only issued them from the govt after WW1.

So this is a civilian piece that could have belonged to a soldier. How did you get the 1875? I can only make out a 4 at the right side of the date area. If it is post civil war it’s the youngest thing I found in the area.

These must be a number of different company versions of this shield. This is one I have.
Is yours silver? I have seen a few like yours online and they appear to be silver.

The tag you posted as a comparison has 1875 on it, which is a more accurate time frame for the item. When it comes to eBay, there is an old saying: "Buy the relic.. not the story, but know what you are buying"

Great finds MC, anything with writing on it gives us the opportunity to research it.
That's what I love so much about this hobby, you never know what might pop up.

Sure wish we had the chance to find campaign tokens here in Canada, all I get to dig are old British Kings & Queens. :laughing7:
