I'm in the process of writing the full-on story for the day chock full of pics (stay tuned), but at the 9.5 hour mark (yes, long day of digging!) I unearthed this little beauty. Best find of the day... So far I've just soaked in mild soapy water for 10 minutes, but I bit terrified of cleaning further, even though I want to. Got any tips? Throw 'em my way. I haven't conceded that the backside is toasted, but it may be. I'll update the thread when I write the full story. Lots of lessons learned as NJLargeCent and I unearthed a LOT of stuff. Record finds when it comes to pull tabs and rusty nails :)

While 1857 is great, 1856 would have been inSANE!

FYI, I cleaned just the backside with room temp hydrogen peroxide. The "one cent" are starting to come through pretty well! I'll do another careful round tomorrow night and update with a pic.

That is a very tough find indeed ! Congrats. !!! Argentium.

when i did mine, my fingertips were white for a cpl hrs, i dunno what the heck that was all about but it went away, lol

Really nice find. Congrats. I've never been lucky enough to find anything this old.

Still waiting on my first, congrats on a great find.

Thanks all. It took just over 9 hours but I got it :) My oldest coin to date. Hoping to get back to the property soon to unearth more!

I did 2 rounds of very gentle cleaning with hydrogen peroxide on a q-tip. Details are starting to reveal themselves! I may go one more round and see how I fare. Post cleaning I dabbed in olive oil as per relic lover's suggestion.

Are you using both methods at the same time? If you are going to use olive oil then stick to just that. Let it soak for a week or more. It takes time with that method. Then use q tip to remove crud. Looks like it will clean up nicely.

ticm, um, I was cleaning with q-tip/h202, then rinsing off, then dabbing in olive oil. I didn't consider soaking it in olive oil. I can certainly try that! Have you used that method?

Now that you got olive oil on it don't use peroxide. Now you just have to be patient and do the long soak. It works but it won't happen over night. Like a week soak and the see how it cleans up. Then maybe more soak time.

Don't mess up your coin dude.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to soak it tonight and won't check it again till next week!

Should turn out nice for you. Post a pic if you remember.

Will do! And thanks to everyone for getting this find to over 1,000 views ... makes it even more special to me!

I have been wanting to find one of those for years

Here it is, soaking in olive oil. I'll check in a week and let you know how it goes.

I'm guessing you will need longer then a week

OK... I'll keep it in as long as it takes. Not like I'm looking to spend it!
