1859 "Fat Boy"
Even though it was bitter cold yesterday, I had a few minutes before my son needed to be picked up, so I swung by an old park just to see if had been hit already. There was very little daylight left and I was not dressed for metal detecting. I went along a gravelly embankment leading up to the park. Almost immediately I got a solid "5" signal on my Garrett CXIII, which is just a hair above a pulltab. I thought it was going to be junk and I was in a hurry, but I dug anyway on the outside chance that it would be a gold ring. When this coin popped out I thought it was a recent European coin because of the thickness, then it hit me that it was a beat up early IH. I flipped it...no shield! I knew immediately it was an 1859 "nickel" as they were called at the time. Kind of a sad looking coin, but I never dug a "Fat Boy" before. Weather permitting I will get back there soon!
