1860s Gold Ring

1860's Gold Ring

Went out and found a gold ring a few days back. It was at a site that dates back to the 1860's The site was last occupied in 1867. The ring has a leaf design with the initials CG. Looks good on my daughters finger. The ring is so small that she is the only one that has a hand it will fit. Folks in the 1860's must have had some small hands.

The ring has no inscription on the inside. The ring can very well be from the late 1700's to the mid 1800's I have found coins from Spain, France, England, Austria, Mexico, and the US at this site.

I still think that this ring was handmade from a gold coin the ring seems mighty thin to be made or turned by machine, unless I am looking at it wrong. Kind of like finding a cool silve or gold coin that has had its back removed and engraved to make a love token....another reason would be no markings on the inside, even a simple makers punch should be there.

I do not know much about the jewelry trade but the leaf design look well conceived. Is it a CG or a EG?

The leaf design looks to be hand engraved, the initials are as you state C. G. most likely the maker/engrave of the ring is not the person who owned it, and the owner carved their initials into the ring, or they could be the initials of someone they loved. I am including a pic of my 1884 dime that was turned into a love token, look at the engraving, it is hand done and very exact in nature.

Very nice ring...You could make your daughter wear that ring on her left hand.....right next to her pinkie finger, lol....Might help keep the wolves away. Tell her it's a lucky ring.....Oh heck, I have daughters too and it made me a nervous wreck at times.....Hang in there and congrats!!!

I like the application.

When I do get a call and it is a prospective, I ask them for their name. If they only state their first name (and do not say please or thank you) I ask for the full name. When I finally do get it I tell them to call back and try again. The smart ones figure it out and the slow ones call back for a repeat.
