So me and EDDEKALB hooked up so he could show me a thing or two (or three) about metal detecting. I have a friend who lives in an 1870's one room schoolhouse so we gave it a shot. We hunted the yard for a couple of hours with no luck at all (tons of trash and shell casings). Ed looked at the plowed corn field that was about 20ft out from the door. He noticed that there was a lot of old broken glass, etc. out in the field. After looking for about 45 mins, I got a good signal on my ACE 250. We dug it up and whoopee!!! an 1866 Indian Head!!! My first non clad coin (only been detecting for about 2 weeks). It appears to be in descent shape (obviously still a lot of mud on it). We will definitely hit that location again!!!!

Gates,

That's so cool!
The IH was the first thing on my 'gotta find' list way back in '89.
STILL have not found one :(
Big congrats on yours :) :)

WTG.. beginners luck feels pretty cool huh?

Keep at it, there is more there to be found i am sure.

Nice find, congrats on a semi-key Indian!!

Welcome to treasure net Gates. Great find. You just started and you already have a coin older than any I have found. Outstanding.

Hope to see you get to post many great finds here.

That dirt is a ***** to get off...obviously being very gentle! I was so excited when I found it that I forgot my digging tool in the field (I guess that will remind me where to check when I go back) :D

side note this coin was with a ace 250 in all metal and max sens i believe at easy 8 inchs
it was giving him a go finding it
pinpoint was on the hole just needed a little widening and a couple hairs deeper
then i gave him a little help and i was stunned(and just a little envious )

had it been a '77 i would have puked ::)
i got taken to school by a detector savant :D ;D ;) 8)

Congrats Gates!
Let us know what else you find, and Keep digging.

Great find, Congrats!
Hard to beat that "beginners luck". ;D
Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~

P.S.> If your taking tips from EDDEKALB, you better frame that puppy, it may be the last thing you ever find. ;D

I always like finding them Indian heads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats Gates. That's an old sucker. My oldest IH so far (and oldest coin for that matter) is an 1874 IH. Those IH's are one of the best looking coins made in my book.
Great job.
