1876 Carson City Quarter, lots of flat buttons, full sickle & big crotal!

I switched tactics today and went for a couple totally new sites based on an 1845 drawing. However, evidence pointed toward much earlier occupation.

Two sites were nowhere to be found and the third didn't look anything like a former dwelling.

However there was iron and I had no other options so I started tearing out grunts. The first good sign was a flat button, followed by a spoon in a trash pit I will excavate in the future

ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1467561583.858210.webpFound a bunch of cut nails, and then I pulled a complete sickle out of the ground!

I happened upon a button spill followed by a few more random buttons including some great tombacs, a bell, and tons of shotgun shells. Just when I thought there were no coins to be found I got the most beautiful signal. A great Carson City quarter. Holed! How it got from Carson City Nevada to Eastern Long Island is beyond me....

After that I looked around some more but it's time for a beer and a swim in the pool. God I love having a couple days off!

Thanks Blaze. That one shot with the dark spots sure makes it look that way. It came out looking nice but once rinsed it turned black.

Nice hunt Steve. Man I have never dug a seated quarter, which is amazing considering all the indian heads and large cents I've found. Looking at the bottle shards, especially the pontil marked base, your trash pit has the potential to be outstanding if is deep and some of the glass is intact.

great finds - love seated quarters!!!!

Ah ha! A man with sharp eyes! Yes, the bottles had pontils. Here's a little bottle porn....ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1467764450.012735.webpImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1467764537.604975.webp
I'm surprised to hear you haven't dug a seated quarter...I'm sure you will next week.

Anyway, I'd much rather dig that cob you snagged earlier this year bud. I love seated, but cob is sweeeeeet!

Steve, I would estimate you broken bottles date to the 1850s/60s. Hopefully you can find some complete ones in that pit.

Good old fashion work right there, hard work and research = old silver!
Congrats buddy, not quite like floating around in a lake but exciting payoff!

Great cc quarter! Congrats!

All work and no play makes scrappy miserable!

You've trumped me on both counts, Scrappy. I've never dug a seated or a CC. Together with your other finds, you had one heck of a day. My compliments on some good research as well!

I need a break one of these days. Think I'll just float around with you brother. I won't care if I don't find anything!
