Finally got out for a few hours this morning. Went to the site that I found my Mass State Copper. It's just a riverside with some nice early history. First good signal was a nice low 90s signal and I was ready for some old silver. Well it was silver but not old, 1949. I hate to say I was disappointed but when you're in a spot that could be hiding Spanish silver you don't expect a Washington. Next signal I dug was a fairly low number and I figured it was another headstamp but it was a small Tombac with a really unique design. Not sure what it is about the design but I love this button. Found a few round balls and a broken spoon. Then I got a nice signal with a high number and out popped my first ever Barber coin, an 1896 quarter that has incredible detail. A signal right beside it gave up a 1907 IH. Felt good to finally get out for a decent hunt. Was hoping for some old coins but can't complain with what I found. It's funny that this is my first Barber coin and first Washington silver. I've found 10 or 12 coins from the 1700s so it's a bit backwards. Best of luck out there everyone, Abe image-3670186854.webp image-2456719199.webp image-3308902928.webp image-349950172.webp

How quickly one can get "spoiled". Yes I saw the reply where you regained your perspective. I can't imagine anyone being actually disappointed with a barber Q.

I think I wouls have gone back to the military button site, looking forward to see what else you get there.

Good looking Barber, and button too.... even though it is not a tombac. :)
Once again I show my cluelessness :-) What the hell is it! Rang up super low

I was psyched with the Barber bud. It was the Washington that made me sad. Beautiful high tone and high number. You know how I love my colonial stuff. But if I'm disappointed about digging silver I should give my machine to someone who appreciated this stuff. I quickly came back to my sense :-)

Not sure, maybe copper or brass with some extra metal thrown in. Tombacs don't really come out green like that, but the backmark is what seals it. It's very rare for a tombac to have a backmark, and when it does, it's probably not going to be in the typical style like that. If I was able to snap my fingers and put 1,000 random tombac buttons on your kitchen table, there's probably a better chance of not having a makers mark than having one.

Oh that's a different button I found. The "Tombac" has no backmark and isn't green, just looks it in the pic. It a grey color. Let me get a pic of the back. But it's almost a gun metal grey and rang up about 20 points below most brass or copper ones I've found. The Standard was just a plain flattie I found

Here's the back. Not sure why it looks green. Must be the light. Grey with a bit of tannish color.

Amazing finds Abe! :occasion14:
Now that's a great day of detecting silver my friend, love the detail on the 'Dandy Button' too!

Dave

Well that could change things... why did you post the front of one button and the back of another. :laughing7:
Haven't I been very clear with everybody that I AM AN IDIOT? I wasn't joking ok man. Lol

Thank you Dave! Fun to have a few hours finally. I wish I could work 3 days/week instead of 6 :-) maybe someday

Yes, you have, which I guess also now makes me an idiot. It's like the Ebola of detecting, pay too much attention to Abe's thread and you'll find yourself stupid, or at least looking that way. :laughing7:

You have lost several IQ points in the last 8 minutes. I apologize for making you dumb............. and now dumber :-)

Great finds man! I still haven't got a barber quarter. Nice tombac too!

I know what you meant anyway.
Spanish Silver does have a tendency to spoil a person.
Mind you I'm happy to dig Silver in any form, but also admit don't give much consideration 1940's to 1960's silver coin. Probably sell next time silver spikes.

Being as new as I am it's always fun finding a new first which both the quarters were but there's something about seeing that 1700s silver that makes you feel damn good for a long time
