1940 Walking Liberty, 3 Rosies, 4 Buffs, 1936 Merc, Silver Spoon , a few IHs..

Here are my keeper finds since my last post from many short hunts. I was surprised to find a Walking Liberty near a sidewalk that made my day and I think the Eley London GASTIGHT pin fire shotgun casing is pretty cool, I never dug one up before. The silver spoon I think is solid. I tried to enlarge some finds, sorry I haven't master the picture taking yet. The last pic is some woods I occasionally hunt, Thanks for looking & HH !

1940 Walker (sidewalk find)
1946, 47, and a 64-D Rosie
1936 Merc
1901 V nickel
1919, 1927, 1929 and a no date Buff nickels (some dates for a change !!)
1879 Indian Head- other 5 in tough shape
1919,1925,1937,1939, no date and newer wheats
Silver spoon (markings =) Celeste GORHAM STERLING
Eley London No 12 GASTIGHT shotgun casing (a 1st )
Good for 5 cents token- back is corroded
NYC “Show World Center” token – 42Nd St.
“ASTE Exposition- April 1954 ERIE PA.” medallion w/hole maybe from a key chain?
Blazer buttons- one with a metal back/no markings and one with a plane on it?
NJ 1923 (#5) and a 1990 dog license
Small clear bottle with a “2” on its neck and a scale on the side ?

Nice finds! You probably already know this, but your Eley Gastight 12 bore shell base is a pinfire shell. These pre-dated center fire shotgun shells, and are an unusual find. It dates between 1850 and 1890, most likely from the 1860's...the heyday of British pinfire manufacture. I generally toss the hundreds of shell bases I dig...but I sure would keep that one!!!

Hey Tommnj,
IMHO, you do not need to apologize for your pictures. The pics are in focus, they are just large enough to fit on the standard window without scrolling, they are well lit, they show nice detail and your finds are great! I think there is a bridge in the background of the forest & stream picture. I'm no longer used to defoliated gray forests since I left Michigan Many years ago and usually here in California there is always some green left in the forest after the Oaks have dropped their leaves.

Mr Tuff: No I haven't tried to clean the IHs yet but will try a peroxide bath soon, I usually have no luck but it might help to get a date off them.

elee: Thanks for some more information on the pinfire shotgun shell, I never heard about or seen one of them before finding this one.

I believe the triangular one on the bottom could be a old fishing weight and the long skinny one maybe is just a old piece of lead and possibly not a bullet.

Well, I still can't tell honestly, it's too bright. Also, without a diameter measurement, I'd be unsure. Scaling off of the pennies though, I think I'm wrong.

Here is what I thought.

If you haven't heard of it, there was a long skinny bullet called a Whitworth, named after its designer, that was used for sharp shooting during the Civil War. They are .45 caliber, and if dropped, almost 1.5 inches long. They are very rare to find in any form, by detectorists or otherwise.

They have a slightly hexagonal shape and have a little twist to that hexagon. There's also a different type that is round or cylindrical. They were exclusively used by the Confederate forces per our known history.

At any rate, congrats on saving American History from being lost!
