After sleeping in way too late today I got my butt in gear and met Ron downtown today. I got to hunt for only a couple of hours before the rain got too heavy for me. I ended up with:

1941-D Mercury dime

1960-D Silver Roosevelt dime

1943-S War nickel

1948-D Jefferson nickel

five wheats ~ '18-S, '19-S, '40-S, '47-S, and '56-D

2 clad quarters

3 clad dimes

34 Memorial cents

When I dug the 1941-D Mercury dime I totally scratched the reverse ~ but I didn't feel so bad because there's an even bigger scratch on the obverse that was there before I dug it!

Happy hunting!

How did you clean them nikkels?

The war nickel I did the baking soda & water paste finger scrub ~ makes 'em look good! And the 1948-D I scrubbed with a wire brush. I don't recommend doing this to any key date or semi-key date coin. But I'll do the baking soda & water paste finger scrub to just about any ugly common date silver coin.

Wow! You are always finding some really cool items. I really like the things that you post. Have you ever thought of video taping your finds and posting them on YouTube?

I tried video taping only one time. I went detecting on the grounds around an old house and dug several old coins, but one target I couldn't get to because it was under a maze of tree roots. The target was a nice one like a deep silver quarter. So the next day I asked my wife to go there and video tape me while I chizzle through the tree roots. After about 20 minutes of chizzling through all the tree roots I finally got to the target . . . . . . . it was a pie tin pan that was folded over several times into a triangle shape. DANG!! I thought it was going to be something good!

:D @ the video! Show it anyhow! :D

That's a bunch a great finds for a two hour hunt, OC! :o

Congrats! Nana ;)

I like 'em! Even the merc is BEAUTIFUL (with a little extra character).

I smiled at your PiePlate story. But you know that ANTICIPATION was wonderful wasn't it? Sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't...but it's always fun.

Oh I was going through my nickel pile from 2007...2 had tar on them and couldn't date them at all. BIG surprise after a short session in HCL (swimming pool acid...VERY dangerous and NOT recommended). They were both 1943 war nickels. Bummer I'm not sure where I got them...heck I would have got all excited..at least. :o

I've never dug a War nickel that was too bad of shape ~ around here anyway, they seem to keep their silvery color ~ you can tell they are War nickels just by their color without even looking at the date. I dug 17 War nickels in 2007. Now I've got 2 for 2008 already.

Happy hunting!
