Doesn't look like especially high grade. The 40's coins though usually had really crappy strikes, so they had weak details when new. I'd call it a VF, always tought to grade from photos, but these coins are so common they're not worth more than spot silver price in any grade except MS/Unc. Still a nice find! Silver is great, and these are nice looking coins. Congrats

thanks for you reply and help, I know it not worth much its not a key date, I was just curious on condition because this is probably the nicest merc I found thanks again.

;D That's the nicest condition Merc Ive seen posted.. very nice ;D

I would say that coin is at least a XF and yes they are common but still a great treat to find in that condition.

Wow, that one looks really good.........I've only had one that comes close, yours is alot better. The reverse looks great.

That's a great looking dime. On the reverse we can clearly see the bands on the pillar. The bands are the first things that fade away. I can clearly see them on your coin.

Nice find.

On Ebay that would be AU!

Yes, the coin does look nice...but it's hard to tell the magnitude of the effects of the light striking the coin's surface. Just because the coin is spotless and shiny, doesn't mean that it is in "awesome condition." I'm not saying yours is NOT, but for example: a barber dime may look ugly due to being tarnished, holed, and scratched...but when you center your focus on detail, you notice that there is virtually no wear on it at all, technically qualifying for a grade of XF. (Its NET grade might be a GOOD, however.) A different barber may have a nice clean surface with no marks, and a very natural, appealing color...but there is more wear on the coin, and it would be forced to recieve a much lower grade than the other, regardless of how much better this one appears.

Just kind of a pet peeve of mine when ppl grade a coin based on how "nice" it looks. And sometimes it's just hard to tell what is original mint luster.
lol, but anyway, yea, it's nice when mercs come out looking as good as the one you have there, most of ours don't...yours seems to look like a VF-XF. Good luck on getting more, I'd hit that park some more. HH!

If it is a dug coin, you will have a hard time getting more than a VF on a coin like that. My guess is that it looks better on here than it would under a jewelers loop.

The coin is very close to an AU. With it being a dug coin it would show "fine" scratches under a magnifier. This would give it an overall grade of XF. I am impressed that you did not put any scratches on it when you dug it. Some people rub the dirt off trying to see the date which causes damage. Good job! Nice find!

Hi Poppa

Quote from 2007 Red Book by R. S. Yeoman

G-4 Good Letters and date clear. Lines and bands in fasces obliterated.
VG-8 Very Good Hald of sticks discernible fasces.
F-12 Fine All sticks in fasces defined. Diagonal bands are worn nearly flat.
VF-20 Very Fine Diagonal bands definitley visible.
EF-40 Extremly Fine Only slight wear on diagonal bands. Braids and hair before ear ear clearly visible.
AU-50 About Uncirclulated Slight Trace of wear. Most mint luster present.
MS-63 Choice Uncirculated No trace of wear.Light Blemishes. Attractive mint luster.
MS-65 Gem Uncirculated Only light, scattered marks that are not distracting. Strong luster, good eye appeal.

I'm not a coin expert, but it looks great to me.

That is a fine looking Merc.

From what I can see in the picture it looks a solid EF40 to me. The obverse may appear worn but from what I can see it looks like a weak obverse strike

Nice Merc!!!
