its a silver wartime nickel
35% silver i believe keep it
 

On Oct. 8, 1942, the wartime five-cent piece composed of copper 56% silver 35% and nanganese 9% was introduced to eliminate nickel, a critical war material. The mint mark was moved to the area you see. These coins were issued between 1942 and 1945.

The "S" identifies the nickel as having been minted at the San Francisco Mint.
