Whoa!! Take it easy on the fella. I am pretty sure Max is a stand up guy and he did not contact the guy for any other reason other than to return it. Lets not call anybody out as a thief, etc, until the fat lady sings. I have returned 2 rings. One was a worthless class ring and I got a thank you on Facebook(which is where I found her) and nothing else. I didn't expect anything though. The other ring was worth about $300 scrap and had a full name inside. Found him through a google search and sent him the ring without any talk whatsoever of any compensation. I got a really nice thank you card and a $50 Red Lobster gift card. I was very happy.

Good luck on your return Max!!

Aaron

Right on Dew! Dew the right thing!

Should have never contacted him if you didn't want to give it back, reward or not.

That is one HUGE ring!

Ditto!!! AMAZING, I can't believe some of the things that are being said here from his so call friends! Like my friend said it another forum....lets give Max the benefit of doubt here.. he might be wanting to meet this guy...why don't we wait until Max comes back to post again....

First off. What a great find!!!
Second: Anyone that full of themselves to get such an extravagant ring, (I know that the service academy cadets pay for their rings) probably deserved to loose it in the first place. Really... 60+ grams. How can you be an effective soldier wearing such a thing.
With a date of 69 he may have served in Vietnam. Or he could have been a Senator's son who got a free pass to VMI with follow up assignments to Germany, while others would have given their left nut for some insect repellent.
Based on your post and this fellows response, he may be on a limited budget now or he's used what he learned to manipulate folks for his gain.
Personally, I would return the ring and collect the $200.00. If it hadn't the info obviously I would keep it and collect my due bounty.

But this fudger is again one of those people who thinks he can manipulate people to do his bidding and believes that the one with the most at the end wins.

"You have to live rich...Not die rich"
Just my opinion.

I don't think Max has any intention of keeping the ring or asking for more money than the guy offers.....he just wanted to know what we thought about it.

I've often thought of being in a similar situation. Returning a valuable ring, a large amount of money, or any other expensive item is a difficult action to take if you actually need the money. If you are fortunate enough to have enough assets to lead a comfortable life, then returning the item may be easier to do. My wife lost her wedding ring and I know she was
devastated. It never was returned and we did have insurance to replace it with a less expensive ring. There are many emotions tied to pieces of prized jewelry and losing something that has sentimental value can be overwhelming. I think Max should return the ring since he did make the contact. I think this is more of a moral issue than anything else. Max has to live with his decision and I hope he feels comfortable with his final action.

Well Tuffy,
You asked for opinions and got plenty of them LOL!!!
I'm glad I am not in this dilemma!!
That is one heck of a nice ring.. would make anyone have a hard time deciding what to do.
Even if I decided to keep it, I don't know if I could part with it for melt value.
Good luck in your decision,
Felix

That is where it gets dicey on a return. The ring was probably insured and he got it replaced for nothing and NOW he only wants to give you $200 for what you could get $1500 and NO telling if you hold till gold gets back to $1900 and beyond? He will laugh all the way to the bank on that return. Just a humble pirate's opinion. Take it for what you will Max.

i like that sign, to funny!

I seen that sign on the way to the beach today, almost Wrecked my truck!! That's Funny!

maxx , you contacted him cause your a stand up guy , it sounds like the owner of the ring may not have been that excited over it

being found. if he is sincere and can only give you $200 then you allready know the answer to that. OR maybee ask him if you

can split the melt value since he got a replacement he may just be happy with that. this is going to be ultimately your descision

but I'm kinda along with everyone else since you contacted him and he knows and offered you a couple of scoots just take it and

know their will always be a warm spot for you in heaven, and contact the local paper as we'll to promote the hobby and image of

people who metal detect.

I've read all the post and it still comes down to this. Max found it, he contacted and said guy offered 200. Yea, he did'nt sound overjoyed but then again he did'nt have to offer anything at all. If Max told him then his intention was to return. If he had not, then what that guy did'nt know would'nt hurt him or anyone else. Personally, I would return even if he had not offered. I have returned 11 class rings so far and some have given me money, fruit baskets, thankyou cards, personal calls and so on. I would take the 200 and be happy. We are in this hobby to find things and class rings are part of it. Max and all of us hunters will find plenty more class rings and rings in general. Just another ring, your gonna find more. nough said. detectahead

Nice ring...Hope it finds its owner.

Wow, talk about peer pressure and the 50/50 on opinions ,,,,to funny. I was hunting off St Augustine beach today and meet another fellow swinging , we stopped chatted a bit and Max's find came up and he to was familiar with the story, folks are talking about this find nation wide,,I guess it just goes to show folks love to talk about the yellow..happy hunting to all.....

I think the real answer is pretty obvious. We are not actual pirates ..we are only pretend pirates.

Any choice here is from the loser. Max can collect how much it cost him to locate the guy ... anything more is optional from the loser.

I've heard rewards of 10% as being a sort of standard ... in that case $200 is not really out of line.

Interesting thread and topic and how greed can be so prevalent in some answers (not all..I'm glad to see).

I have a solution to this huge problem.
1st: I will talk with my State & Federal leaders banning all MDist's from keeping there finds.
2nd: This will then be presented to the US House & Senate for vote and passed unaminously without any of the laws written yet. (Laws to be written in at a later date)
3rd: So as not to increase our Federal Debt or the need to vote on raising the Debt Ceiling, I will personally
purchase all plastic containers used to "securely" store all jewelry, coin, relic, etc. until which time they can be returned to there rightful owner. I here-by nominate myself as the sole Lost & Found Czar of these United Staes.
All items of value not placed inside approved lost & found containers once retrieved will be subject to fines up to AND to exceed their face value.
I also appoint Max as Chief Under-Czar the the Czar of Lost & Found of the United States(Life time Appointment) Congratulations Max!

Its already against the law to keep your finds. The law says that everything over a certain value must be turned in. Each state has a value limit, some are $50, some are $100 etc. They have the minimum value so people don't turn in a quarter. If no one claims the find in a certain amount of time it goes back to the finder. They don't enforce the law but its a law. Surprised how many people don't know this.

If you found a wallet containing $2000 and contacted the owner to return it, you certainly would not expect a reward of $2000. I'm not saying this is the case here, but the way it reads sounds more like a negotiation than an offer to return the ring. :icon_scratch:
