1st Experience CRH for Halves

After reading several of the threads on here and elsewhere I couldn't resist getting some halves so see what I could find. I happen to work for a Credit Union so I have a little more access to obtaining the coins although we don't accept rolled coins since we have a machine and I have to wait until a bag fills up before I buy any. I can get half a dozen penny bags (5000 ea) each week but halves don't come in as often so I purchased 16 rolls from a friend that manages another bank while at lunch yesterday. I got back to work and before I went inside I couldn't resist checking out one roll. I found a 1967! I couldn't wait to get home to check the rest out. The remaining 15 rolls yielded nothing. I was a little disappointed considering my early success but I figured it was a good start.

This morning I poured the remaining halves in the machine at work hoping to fill up the bag so I could purchase what was already there and sort through them but unfortunately it didn't. Strangely one very normal looking half was rejected by the machine so I put it in my pocket planing to spend it or give it to my 8 y/o daughter as a Christmas gift. Toward the end of the day one of the tellers messed up while changing a nickel or dime bag and I was asked to help re-run all of the coins in the machine to help balance. Not only could I see that the bag is only 152 halves short of being full but while running them back through the machine rejected one. A 1967! I simply swapped it for my non-silver in my pocket and the machine balanced.

A bit long winded but I was pretty excited to start my new hobby this way. I'm planning on ordering a couple of boxes very soon and can't wait to get in that bag. I've got tellers at our other branches looking out for their bags to fill up so I can go through those too. So far so good. I'm looking forward to hanging out with all of you here at the forum.

Just make sure your boss doesnt get angry at you for dumping halves in your own machine :laughing7:

I'm actually more worried about the tellers that have to empty the machine all the time more than the manager. I pitch in a good bit so I think they cut me some slack.

I actually checked out the CU right next door and found that they have a machine like ours. Since I have an account there as well I will just use that as my dump so I'm keeping all the coins in ours clean of ones I've already sorted. Next step is ordering some boxes. My only concern is as an employee I don't want to appear to be doing something questionable or cost the organization a lot of additional expenses.

I wouldn't risk my job just to find a few silver coins. But that's just me.

Goes without saying. I wouldn't do anything that any other member of the CU could do. Deposits/withdrawals and that's it. I just make sure that if I'm touching money (mine or not) it's under dual control and in front of a camera. I want to be as transparent as possible as to not raise any questions. Like you said, it's not worth risking my job for a hobby.
