Decided to start posting my casino finds on a regular basis again. I go 2 or 3 times a week and this looks to be a banner year for wheaties. I usually go thru $40 at the casino and pick out wheats and Canadians (the coins, not the people, which are harder to spot ;D) and anything unusual.

Today was my best return so far from $40 in pennies -

Wheaties: 1944, 1944-D, 1944-S, 1945-S, 1948-D, [red]1949,[/red] 1952-S, [red]1954,[/red] 1955, 1955-D, [red]1956,[/red] 1957-D, 1958-D

Canadian: [red]1969,[/red] 1979, 1998, 2000, [red]2003 (No P, Royal Diademed)[/red]

Foreign: Sweden 50 öre (2003)

Any date in red is a first timer for the year. Also did $200 in halves but got only a 2002-P.

40 days into 2008 and I've already found 52 different wheaties and well on the way to beating my all time best of 69 different from 1996. And the 44-S was the 50th and completes a roll, my first S mint roll from any year!

And I'm going back tomorrow...

Well done Immy. It sounds like your well on your way to beating your 1996 record. I didn't realize you have been doing this that long. Congrats on the longevity!!!

My husband asked me if the 'S' mint cents were special which I could not answer but since you mentioned it in your post I will ask you. Are they special? Looking in the Red Book it seems the mintage on them is a little lower than others of the same year in most cases but still minted big numbers of the 'S'.

Another question concerning the Candian 2003 (No P, Royal Diademed)....what is this?

Good luck tomorrow..........

Well LJ (and Mr LJ) -

You're right, S mint wheaties have always had an allure because they generally were minted in lesser quantities and thus held the most value. While this is especially true in the early teen years and 1931, the fascination lasted right till the end when the 55-S (with its relatively small mintage of 44 mil.) was heavily promoted by dealers as a modern day rarity, which it really wasn't. And the effect lasts to this day.

As far as the Canadian, in 2003 there were two simultaneous switches in pennies. First, the Queen's portrait that had been in place since 1990 (showing her in a diademed crown) was replaced with a new rendition, minus the crown. Second, a new alloy of nickel plated steel was introduced, designated by a P mintmark below her portrait. This created four varieties for pennies in 2003: No P, with a crown (royal diademed); P, with a crown (royal diademed); No P, without a crown & P, without a crown.

I often wonder how the Queen feels about seeing her age reflected on the nation's coinage.

BTW, any Canadian coin with P mintmark is magnetic, but some aren't, made by mistake.

All,

I dont know how much of a premium you can get for the "S" mints, but there are dealers that buy Wheat pennies by the bag and go thru them and pull out all of the "S" mints.

They can sell them for more than they can get for the run of the mill Wheat pennies, and as you all know the Wheat pennies sell for about 3.5 to 4 to one.

Good luck on the pennies Immy.

The date is getting closer! ;D
