2 colonial coppers and 3 "fools"colonial coppers. Updated pic of King George II

Haven't been out since Sunday so I was itching to get some hunting in today. Went to the field that I found the 1828 large cent and 2 musket balls in. The field is a good ways from the house that I park my car at. I could walk I guess but why do that when you can borrow a perfectly good quad from the home owner. Got to the site a few minutes later and started hunting. Great news. They are starting to cut the corn. Hunting will be easier today.

First signal came after about 10 minutes. Out pops an 1864 indian head penny. :) Continued with the hunt and next signal was one of the fools coppers I mentioned in the post title. Coin sized....copper colored....button. :-\ Darn! Oh well. After I recovered from my near heart attack I continued. Next signal...........you guessed it. Another fools copper (large flat copper colored button with shank broken off.. :-\ I kept plodding along and found a few more buttons. One has a nice design of a tree or plant on the front and some writing that I cant make out on the back. The others are old corroded buttons with shanks still intact.

Here's where the hunt took a turn for the better. Next signal was what I thought to be another large flat button but to my surprise it was a colonial coin. ;D ;D The bust is facing left and the back of the coin leads me to believe this is either a Connecticut coppa or an English halfpenny. The coin is not cleaned up great yet. i will post more pics after it is cleaned.

Next two finds were the musket ball and the lead fishing sinker that appears to have been fashioned out of a musket ball. I followed this one up with another fools copper flat button. (2 of these "fools" copper buttons are almost half dollar size...the third is slightly smaller than a large cent)

Last find of the day was the second colonial. Don't have much detail on this one yet. Got it soaking in olive oil. We'll see what we get soon. I'll update the post with pics later. The coins rang up as 72-74 VDIs on the DFX and the buttions rang up in the mid 40's. The White's DFX really did me proud today. If it keeps this up I may have to start singing to it like Kirk does to his machine. LMAO!!! Thanks for looking and any opinions on the coins will be greatly appreciated. More pictures will follow as the coins get cleaner.

Great coppas, bud! That one looks like a King George II (1720-1760). You made Kirk proud of you, buddy!

You're great like the dude who invented the word "great:" Mr. Great!

Re: 2 colonial coppers and 3 "fools"colonial coppers.

How deep were you punching with the spida coil?

Re: 2 colonial coppers and 3 "fools"colonial coppers.

Here's some better pictures of the coins. The first is the back of the King George. Cant make out the date. Second pic is a close up of the second coin. Appears to have some writing on the edge. Can anyone make it out? Third picture is of the coins (above) and the buttons (below). Now you see why I thought they were coins.

Deepest find today was 6 1/2 inches. (one of the flat buttons.) Both of the coins were 5 1/2 to 6 inches. The other signals were between 4-6 inches. I've found a few mercury dimes at 7 1/2 inches with the spider coil though. It's great in areas that don't have alot of trash. I love it.

That one coppa looks like a Liberty Cap...if you have a coin book, size it up.

Way to go on some sweet finds.

The size is right for it to be a Liberty Cap Kirk. I cleaned it up a little more and still cant get much detail. I did see something however. It appears that it has the number 1000 stamped across it. the second zero even appears to be double stamped. Does anyone know what this is or what it means? I still can't get any other detail off of it. Secondly, Although this coin is much thicker than the flat buttons i found and even appears to have a partial reeded edge, I'm starting to think there is a possibility that it could be a button. After some cleaning, there is a spot in the middle of the coin that looks like it could have been where the shank on a button would have attached. (see last picture) Another reason i think it's a coin is it rang up as a 72 VDI on the DFX. All of the buttons were in the 40's. If you look very closely you can see the partial reeded edge on the upper right part of the coin in the first picture below.

Hello sweet finds there, nice old coins, but also wanted to say, pretty country, that looks like a good spot for deer right there, i would give that area a try early opening day of deer season no doubt, good hunting tg

Re: 2 colonial coppers and 3 "fools"colonial coppers.

What a cool hunt!

That would drive me crazy not knowing what those coins are. I hope there's some silver ones there for you!

Thanks for the photos and congratulations on the buttons and coins!

Here is the end result of the cleaning effort on the King George II copper. Unfortunately, the coin appears to be slightly crimped so it is hard to see a date. :-[ Oh well. Maybe the next one will be better.
