Got out for an hour in the woods..just got back. Afraid to clean the first coin (front/back shown pics #1, 2)...strange design on the coin....can also see some letters on the top of the coin in the second pic.....any ideas???

2nd copper (3rd pic)...don't think anything is left at all
Also found musket ball and buckle.
Going to go back to this site very soon!

Would like to clean the first coin up a bit more, but wanted to post it beforehand...just in case i lose something from the coin.

THanks!

Think your first pic may be upside down and some type of Britainnia image.

Yes, that's clearly a Britainnia reverse. The shield is interesting and what probably drew the counterfeit remark from Crusader. It could be right but maybe match up some American coppers to see if you can find something similar.

Really too bad about the condition because it's an interesting coin.

Being eaten that bad it wouldn't be a surprise.

I don't know that I'd use peroxide on that one. Probably just a wet q-tip rolled gently over the coin to see if anything came out. You already cleaned the coins with water though?

:-\

I don't think there's much point in doing anything. The metal appears to be gone, no cleaning will help that.

... but there ain't much risk in trying!

Yeah I ran it under hot water and gave it a little rub...it is soaking in dishsoap/water right now

The soil in the area of Rhode Island I live in is not very kind to old coppers at all. I have found a bunch over the past couple years...not many of them in good shape!

Same here, I can measure my crusty ones in pounds.

Looking at the letters on the second pic of the coin....I can read BORA
I looked at my red book and see a Nova Eborac....coinage for New York
Same shape to the shield! Date is 1787

LOL, so much for the counterfeit statements  Congrats on getting the coin identified and just a shame it is in such sad shape, not many NY coppers ever found by detectorists.Mike in Berks, from Berks County Pa found one in the past few months that was in decent shape, his is different style though.

Yep, looks like you got it.
