2 Tombacs and Mystery Gold

Went for a very quick afternoon hunt with mbcuce. Found a couple of small tombac buttons and maybe a gold item. I'm not sure that it is gold, but this is how it came out of the ground. It was about 8" deep and within 6' of the tombac buttons. It would be very strange for it to be modern, given the site where it was found, but I guess anything is possible.

Is there a way to test whether it is gold and could it be late 18th or early 19th century?

Definitely appears to be gold. It seems thin, I wonder if it was a plating on something, some type of jewelry? I havent seen anything like it.

Yeah, I can't figure that one out. There is no hole or ring on it, and no lip or clips that would have held it to something.

In the past I have seen metals applied to the back of glass to make the stone more "shiny". I can't tell the composition of your piece, but you should be able to figure that out, maybe with the help of chemical test kits or a jeweler. Often these were set in jewelry.

Thanks! The scale and the fact, that the metal is faceted, fits this theory. And, we have found a paste cufflink, with a silver backing, at the same site.

The size and shape seem right on. I can't see evidence that there was any kind of "tab" or bracket on the back, but it could have been there. I'll keep studying it.
