I think that "flattening" happened post mint. Looks kinda cool!

looks like someone squashed it with a press of some type.

Hope you don't mind; I took the liberty to make them a little clearer. Got no idea what might have caused that. You may want to post in the "coin" forum.

Looks like a planchet error to me. Coins surface obverse may have been struck through cloth as well.
