Today, I had an appointment get cancelled, and after work, I didn't know what to do now. So of course, let's go metal detecting!
I decided to go to a fairly new permission. In 3 visits, I've found about 40 wheat cents and a few silver dimes and my first Franklin half dollar! This place dates pretty far back, but it has a lot of remodeling to the yard...total bummer...
I decided to detect around the pond, and I sure an glad that I did that, I'm now officially in the 1700's club! I got a decent signal, but, was a 79/80 on my detector, so I figured a penny or maybe a fishing lure or something. To my surprise, it looked like a large cent! I retrieved my tooth brush and I could see AMERICA on the back, since I could tell it was pretty corroded, I took it easy on the other side... I brushed it a little bit, and saw the L in LIBERTY, And then I brushed over the date area with my thumb, and I could make 17. I just stopped, looked again, and then put it in my pouch...I thought about it the rest of the time I detected, going for more of that age, but nothing. I did manage 5 more wheats, one is a nice 1918. Also a 1954 roosie and a 1942 mercury dime. It's when I got home that I confirmed my hopes! A 1796 LIBERTY CAP cent... It is toasty, but I love it!!!

BAM!, love them early LargeCents!! congrats on a great one!!!

Thanks!! I refrained from cleaning it with water or anything... I felt I would lose visibility of the date if I did that. I will take a picture of the back, and show AMERICA, and also how much of that packed clay/ dirt I left on it...

Big congrats, they certainly dont come around every day.
And the 96 is a hard one to get.
You were right about not putting water on that one..

Really nice coin. And a hearty welcome to the 1700s club from another recent member!

Super find there, and yes the 96's are scarce.

That's one awesome coin! Sometimes the coppers look better when you leave a little of the "Situ" on them. It gives them character. Congrats!

Congrats on pulling that fine toast. :occasion14: Any day you break into the 1700's is a GREAT day. :notworthy:

Sweet lib cap!!! I've only found one. That's a real winner there that are friggin impossible to find! Congrats!!!

Congratulations on the old copper coin recovery! The cap liberty cent is one of my favorite coins.

Thanks for the comments everyone... I will reminisce digging that coin for a while... I even brought it to work with me to show and to look at during break time...

Finding a Liberty Cap large cent is an experience to be cherished, congratulations. And since no one has chimed in yet as to the variety of your coin, let me offer that it looks like a Sheldon 91 (scarce, Rarity-3). The corrosion on your coin looks like the type that can benefit from light cleaning, but I'd be inclined to leave it like you have. Here is a good online source for Liberty Caps:
